However, only a very few of the sites can accommodate 3 tents.
Wake me when it's time to go.

I was able to reserve the last site available and we will make it happen. Shooting to get there at 2-3 pm on Sunday and try to get permits and cache water at Homer Wilson. If we can accomplish that, we can start the trail Monday morning and have Thursday and Friday to hit any other spots like Cattail Canyon and Santa Elena.

Skip setting up the tents and sleep under the stars!

+1 on sleeping out in the open.  I'm known to set up a cot in the backyard at home even.

Pumped the Rim sites are open again. That makes for a much shorter day if we can get a permit for those sites. Plus a sunrise and sunset on the Rim

Also, I'm assuming the cheap plastic trowel won't do much good in Big Bend. Do you need a heavy metal trowel?

Sea to Summit alloy pocket trowel works great.  A little pricey though.

I use a garden trowel (Lowe's, I think?), plastic handle, metal body, serrated edge.  I fashioned a sheath for it out of cardboard and duct tape and carry it in my backpack.

I just took a look at that.   Pretty cool!  I may have to upgrade.
