Advice on trip itinerary
« on: November 04, 2015, 04:28:33 PM »
I'm finally getting out to Big Bend the week before Christmas with a group of two and am looking for help with my rough itinerary. We only have three full days so we're looking to maximize a couple different options.

Day One: arrive in the morning, get permits, hike South Rim.
Days Two/Three: overnight float from Lajitas to the Santa Elena takeout.
Day Four: early trail run before leaving.

Some specific questions I have:
-Will we have any difficulty getting a backcountry camping permit? What backcountry sites should we try to get to make getting around between these places easier?
-We're bringing our kayaks but looking for a shuttle - How much should we expect to pay to have our car shuttled? Would it be worth doing a boomerang from Santa Elena takeout as a day trip or overnighter instead?
-Any suggestions for a great trail to catch the sunrise on our way out? We're both experienced trail runners so anything less than 6-7 miles would be great.

Thanks so much for any advice!

- For Back country permit availability, take a look at the online campsite calendar at http://75.41.147.131/permits/welcome.php, select Step 2, and type in the month and day that you're interested in from last year.  That will give you an idea what may or may not be available this year.
- You can call Far Flung Outdoor Center in Study Butte and ask about shuttle rates
