Alpine, Davis Mountains and GUMO
« on: June 15, 2010, 09:56:36 PM »
I think my fall trip is set. I just made reservations, using the new system, for four nights in Davis Mountains State Park. BTW, the new reservation system worked pretty well. Anyway, I'm going to Alpine for three days of the Big Bend Balloon Bash September 4-6. I'm staying in DMSP each night so I have some driving to do each day. In addition to the BBBB, I hope to hike Madera Canyon (near BMSP) and I plan to do some star gazing while I'm in DMSP. Very nice up on Skyline Drive after dark. Once I'm done with the BBBB, I'm heading up to GUMO for another attempt to climb Guadalupe Peak. If this works out just right, I may be climbing GP on my birthday, when I will officially become a Senior Citizen...I'll be turning 55 years young. Other than pictures at the BBBB, some star gazing and the GP climb, this trip is all about relaxing and enjoying some time outdoors. Of course being outdoors was the goal 2 months ago when I was in GUMO & DMSP and it rained like heck so you never know.

Weather dependent itenerary:

Fri 9/3      Drive SA to DMSP
Sat 9/4     6am Drive to Alpine for BBBB    PM Relax in DMSP  Evening Star gaze
Sun 9/5    6am Drive to Alpine for BBBB    PM Hike Madera Canyon  Evening Marfa Lights? Star gaze?
Mon 9/6    6am Drive to Alpine for BBBB    PM Relax in DMSP  or  Drive to GUMO
Tues 9/7   Drive to GUMO if I didn't do so on 9/6    PM Hike McKittrick Canyon
Wed 9/8   Climb GP - my Birthday!
Thur 9/9   Laze around camp @ GUMO or (more probably) drive home to SA if I'm tired of sleeping on the ground
Fri 9/10    Drive SA if I stayed in GUMO 9/9
Sat 9/11   Celebrate the big 55 B'day with the family at Olive Garden!

Now to get back into a training regimen so I'll survive this trip!

That sounds like a pretty ambitious trip for an old man!  :)

Speaking of old, I'll be spending my 50th birthday this Oct at the bottom of the Grand Canyon.
