Another Itch that needs scratching!
« on: September 30, 2009, 01:16:11 PM »
Bibe Bound again!  I plan to leave for Austin on Friday Oct. 2nd.   Spend the night with my son and pick up the camping gear. I use it more than he does.  Anyway, Austin is a good place to start out for Bibe since it breaks up the trip a little.

Here's the plan:

Arrive in Bibe Saturday afternoon.  Set up camp in the basin.  Should arrive early enough to have plenty of time before sunset.
Of course photography is my main obsession and where better than at Bibe.  I hope there are a few thundershowers still around for some good cloud shots over the mountains.

I'm going to play it by ear this time with no particular schedule.  I'll be carrying some heavy camera gear so long hikes will probably be out.
I've got a new Canon 70-200 f/2.8 L IS lens (3 pounds) with a 2x tele extender that will give me 400mm reach. (For bear hunting)   Of course I'll probably be using my 10-20 wide angle most of the time.  To get em right I have to carry the tripod also.  (another 4 pounds).  Too bad they don't allow pack mules.  Ansel Adams used em.

Lost Mine Trail

Cattail Falls

Santa Elena

and if it's not too hot...  a few short desert hikes - to be determined.

A trip into Terlingua to look up John Wells at the Field Lab. I follow his blog daily.  What a guy!  http://thefieldlab.blogspot.com/

This may be the trip where my truck is well behaved... Had problems last two trips out - third time is a charm.

I'll try to post a few updates from the Lodge if the laptop behaves.

Trip report and mucho photos  (for Homero) to follow upon return.

My wife and I are headed out to the park as soon as we get our daughter on the school bus. Her grandparents will be staying with her. She's not very happy that she doesn't get to go. We'll be staying at the Chisos Mining Company. Keep an eye out for a silver Toyota Camry with Big Bend plates. Looks like our schedules will be offset a bit, as we'll be leaving sometime Sunday.

P.S. I don't have a laptop, so after this post I probably won't be online until Monday night.

Good for you guys,I think it is a sin to turn on your PC, while you are in Big Bend. I think i would turn on laptop only to download some of the pictures, i would need to have as a back up. Othe than that, I know my pc will be back at home, waiting for me.

Be gone, you two. No more posts , until you return.

Well, East Texan, I wouldn't bother looking for me. I posting this from the Best Western in Ozona. We never even made it into the park. I'll come up with a non-trip report later. Short story is that the folks in the hospital in Alpine were very nice. John A. from the clinic in Lajitas (432-424-3535) was very helpful over the phone. Good news is it wasn't swine flu. Bad news was no hiking. We'll see if we can do a Caverns of Sonora tour in the morning, just so we can have a little fun.

Richard, bummer!  Sorry to hear about that.

Al

PS I can remember at least twice over the years this has happened to us.  Better to go on vacation and get sick than have no vacation at all. Look at the bright side  . . . you get to see the Caverns of Sonora.  We made a special trip and spent overnight too.  It's like being in the inside of a Geode.

We're running kind of slow today, so we'll probably save it for another trip, preferably one where our daughter is along for the ride.
