Big Bend in Late October
« on: October 06, 2007, 10:20:24 AM »
Me and the missus are headed to BB the week of the 22nd.  Never been there in October and was wondering what the people/acre (crowds) might be.  We're also planning on staying at the lodge maybe a couple of nights while we're there - ya think I need to make reservations - we're trying to be spontaneous and take it as it comes if ya know what I mean - we'll be camping as well.  Planned Hikes:
Top O Casa Grande!
Pine Canyon Falls
Cattail Falls
Emory Peak
I'll have my 4 wheel drive truck this time, so I'm also planning on driving some of the back roads if conditions allow it.
Can't wait to go - it's been 4 long years since we were last there!
"Rugged isolation in a Jeep with the top down, doors off, sweaty, dusty, listening to your flavor of tunes, immersed in the most beautiful and beguiling desert mountains in all of the Southwest, the Sierra Quemada. Nothing short of spiritual cleansing. " D. Locke

Hi Don H!
Sounds like a great itinerary.  We usually go in the summer, but did go in Sep last year.  Certainly more crowded at that time as compared to the summer, but manageable.  You may want to make reservations just in case.  As I recall, the stone cottages were booked and all we could get was the Emory Peak Lodge (which is near the stone cottages).  I think the other rooms were available, though.  But, reservations never hurt and as they say, better to be safe than sorry.

You may want to add the following hikes to your plan, if time permits:
Grapevine Hills
Burro Mesa Pouroff
Lost Mine (at least to the saddle that lets you see the SE rim and Elephant Tusk.)
Chimneys Trail

Have a great time and be sure to post your trip report and pictures!!

I totally agree BBH, Lost Mine and Grapvine Hills are a must.  How long are you staying Don H?

i'm going with my parents in tow the 24th-27th, and the lodge was booked by mid september. they had weekday rooms available, but the weekends were full. however, big bend motor inn still has plenty of rooms, so all is not lost  :eusa_dance:

of course, you could always tent camp, thats more fun anyways  :cheesy:

I'll be there the week of Oct 29. Planning on several overnighters and some day hikes mostly in the south by RGV. My friends I'm going with want to take their giant tent on wheels instead of tent camping. Anyone else gonna be there then?

Viper, you will find us at the Basin lodge parking area early in the morning, getting ready for an overnighter on the South Rim.  Group of 5, so far, Black SUV.

Not only in the Hot Springs but in the vicinity of the Hot Springs!  Which can, and often does, lead to accelerated consumption of adult beverages prior to arrival thereto . . .
