is this a reasonable one day tour for this week?
from terlingua- drive to lajitas to fm170
fm170 to presidio
up 67 to fort davis stopping to take a few pics at shafter
ft davis back to terlingua via alpine
driving a jeep wrangler
plan on having a case of water in teh jeep just in case
how deserted will fm170 be during the day?
You'll most likely have 170 all to yourself. What you describe is doable in a day, depending on how much sight seeing you want to do. I could probably spend a day just on FM170 with all the short "let's-see-what's-here" hikes.
I did a similar day trip in 2003 when the kids were little, except we started the loop from Ft. Davis. We even took the side trip east to Plata and than the other to the west to Candelaria. Ate lunch in Presidio, dinner at some hole in the wall between Lajitas and Terlingua. pretty much a pavement tour. Enjoyed it a lot.
That could be a long day.
Just start early, it will be a long drive, a very pretty drive, but long

I drove 170 from the park to Presidio last Friday, and it was empty. Once we got past Lajitas, we only passed three cars coming from Presidio. Leaving early morning, that would be a long but doable one day drive.
