The Chisos Lodge has a decent restaurant, highly recommend the Chisos cheeseburger.  Gift shop is directly adjacent to the restaurant.  The dining area has an awesome view of the sunsets.

Whatever you do don't order the "spicy Chicken wings" they are BRUTAL, my tung was burnt for a day or so.

The tamales with Chipotle sauce had quite a kick as well.  The beef soft tacos had a kick as well, but of a different kind.... and on a delayed basis, if you know what I mean.

The only 2 things that I have to say about the lodge restaurant are that the food is great and they keep a good supply of Barking Squirrels and Chisos Butt Ducks. If anyone came to this post inadverdantly looking for info on the hike to Emory Peak...It's a fabulous 5-6 hour hike with great views and challenging trails with a scramble up the summit to top things off...literally! Cheers!

Hmmm...I definitely need to eat at the lodge restaurant next time.
I'll wait till after I summit Emory though. I'll need to replenish the lost calories.
Emory Peak can be done in much less than 5-6 hours in my experience.
I do agree with russco that the views are great!

Am planning on hiking the south rim as a day hike (up Laguna Meadows & down via Pinnacles) when I am in BIBE in November.  Is it plausible to try and hike Emory as a side trip?  From the Pinnacles trail, how many miles is it to the Peak and about how long would this "diversion" take?

I am thinking with the shorter days being Fall, this might be too much to try as a day hike.  When I have hiked the south rim before, I have departed the basin trailhead about 8am and returned about 5pm....

Adding Emory to the South Rim is plausible. It's a two mile round trip from the Pinnacles trail (assuming the new trail alignment hasn't been finished). When my Dad and I day-hiked the South Rim in mid-November a decade or so ago we started at dawn and got back to the basin around 4-4:30. That hike didn't include Emory but did include the Northeast Rim, for a total of 14.5 miles (not including the extra half mile or so I spent backtracking to pick up my hat I'd dropped). If you substitute the Emory peak trail for the Northeast Rim, you should be able to squeeze it into the amount of daylight you have at that time of year. Carry a flashlight or two, just in case. And expect to be very tired at the end of the day...

Tell you what, when Jeff and I did the "drop everything trip" back in the Spring - we did the Pinnacles up and did Emory Peak and then marched to the South Rim. Jeff had not been on the summit before, so now that is a notch in his walking stick and won't have to do that again. It was a long and tiring day. We left the backs at the bear station on the trail and by the time we got to the South Rim, don't know about the others, but I was whipped.

Last December I day hiked up the Pinnacles to Emory Peak, then to the South Rim via Boot Canyon.  Came back on Laguna to the Basin.  I left the Basin at 6:30 am with my headlamp, and made it back by 3:30 PM.  It took two days to recuperate.

I'm taking my time this year....
