What is the distance?  I can't tell.  Must be 15 miles or more?

Hi QS, My questions regarding topography and finding the spring was in response to your post to Homer that stated, "Homer67,
A great hike is a R/T into Juniper, about 2 1/2 hours to an incredible overlook across the desert to the Sierra Del Carmens..."
Is the Elephant Tusk hike the same that you were describing to Homer in the above quote?  Does R/T stand for Rice Tank and are you trecking across the desert to Juniper Canyon?  IF so, how far to Juniper Spring?  Please be patient with me.
Thank you.

Thanks, QS.  But just to be sure... You are taking the road that goes to Pine Canyon, passing Rice Tank, Roberts Roost and parking around Twisted Shoe?  How long of a drive is that once you leave the blacktop?  My map shows an upper and lower Juniper Springs.  Which are you referring to?  It looks like the upper spring is not zoned for zone.

We've done that a couple of times (slowly) in a Subaru Outback. I remember it being 30-45 minutes one-way from the blacktop.

We have pushed back our trip to Nov 7th...we had considered checking out the Water Works, but I think we are going to go ahead and tackle the OML!  We will arrive in the park around 1 pm on the 7th and will take the rest of that day to caching water et al at the box near the Homer Wilson and making the drive up Glenn Springs then Juniper Canyon roads; we will start the hike at the Dodson trailhead on the morning of the 8th.

Perhaps our paths will cross!
Ah Big Bend, we will soon return to reacquaint ourselves in our ritual of blood, exhaustion and dehydration. How can we resist the temptation to strip ourselves of the maladies of civilization?

I think you will enjoy that trip and get a lot of exercise.  Just make sure that you do not make a wrong turn at the smokey creek junction with the Dodson.  I only say this because the sign at one time was laying down and I made the mistake.  It was fun but put me behind the eight ball time wise.
