One or Two Must-Hikes
« on: November 29, 2006, 01:48:33 PM »
Hey everybody,

I'm planning a trip to Big Bend December 22-30. I have never been. My small group will be riding dual sport bikes through the park.

I would like to do a little hiking. Maybe one or two half day hikes. Are there one or two that you would highly recommend?

Also, any information re: dual sport riding and tent camping (especially tent type) at this time of year (late December) would be appreciated.

Thanks for the great site,

Lost Mine Trail (4.8 miles) for sure.

Other good, shorter choices:
Grapevine Hills (2.2 miles)

Santa Elena Canyon (1.7 miles)

You can find others here.

Let's not forget "Pine Canyon" if you have the high clearance means.  If you're into an all day or overnight backpacking trip, then do the whole rim loop from Boot Canyon to Leguna Meadow.  Oh yeah, there's also the Bluecreek Canyon hike, always nice....then there's......

If you can ride up to "Pine Canyon" and hike the 2 trail miles, you might be rewarded with a waterfall (if it's rained in the last week or so).  You can spend the afternoon there lounging on the gravel "beach"....good place to hang a hammock for a nap in the shade.
Earnst Tinaja is a must for a first trip.   Leave "Juan" a Christmas present along the way. ( you'll understand when you get there)
The hot springs will be a welcome treat.

All of the hikes mentioned above are right on.  I would also add the Chimney's Trail to this list.  Given it's location in the desert, a late December hike would be an ideal time for it.

Mule ears would be one of my "musts"
If you climb mountains, no explanation is necessary, if you don't , no explanation is possible.

A little known cross-country hike that I highly recommend involves parking at Solis on the river and then hiking on teh east side of Mariscal Mtn all the way to the river.

It's a fairly easy hike off trail and leads to a very nice upstream view of the Mariscal Canyon area. It's not anywhere near as high as the rim trail but you will be rewarded with a view very few people ever see.

Be aware that leaving vehicles unattended along the river can result in thefts from them. I would be leery of leaving motorcycles alone. If your group is large enough, hike in two waves and leave someone with the equipment. If you backcountry camp at Solis it would be very easy to do it that way.
