Title: Planning a 4 day weekend....
Post by: Peach on January 24, 2008, 03:26:53 PM
I was going to wait until I could take a full week off before going to BB again, but I can't wait that long.  I'm planning a quick trip which will get me into the park on a Thursday morning, then I have to head home the following Sunday (told y'all it was a quick trip :icon_wink:)...I haven't decided when yet but sometime in the next two months.  I've never backpacked alone and this will be my first trip to BB alone.  Any suggestions on an itinerary?  I'm going to dig around through my maps and books tonight, but thought someone here might have a suggestion.

Thanks in advance!

What HAVE you done in Big Bend.  If we know that, we can recommend what you should do next.

I done the Lost Mines Trail, Window Trail, Santa Elena Canyon, Boquillas Canyon, Hot Springs trail, most of the day hikes since I usually have a 7 year old with me.  This will be my first trip without here....mom needs some intense hiking time of her own.

agree with bdann - the South Rim is the best hike / overnight backpack you could do - hike up and spend a few nights up there - SW3, SW4 and NE4 are some of the favourite sites (I know they close the NE rim for parts of the year) - if you bring a water filter you'll be able to collect water from the tinajas heading down from the South Rim above Boot Spring - it's a physically tough hike up but slow and steady'll get you there - it's a quick hike back down - with an early start you could be back to your car by 9-9:30am on Sunday morning for the drive home - it's a tough hike to do with kids unless you are willing to carry all of their kit - and even then it's a long way for some kid to walk...

now is the time to do the South Rim as well as Pine Canyon. A 4x4 not necessary, usually, but a fairly high truck would be recommended to get down Pine Canyon Road.  Hm....what else?   :eusa_think:

The South Rim, definitely #1 for me.
But I enjoyed the area around Ernst Tinaja as well.

Agree on at least an o/n for the South Rim. Have you done Cattail Falls? Blue Creek to the red rock area is great too.  :ranger:

Agree that S Rim is probably best overnight hike.  consider Mule Ears if you think it's going to be too cold for S Rim.

Wholeheartedly agree with above re:chisos , esp as a first time solo.   With no second car, the only loops are really the OML or the chisos or the more strenuous marufo V ..   I like Colima sites in the chisos a lot also, for what it's worth.  I think they are underappreciated, except by birders.  No views, at least rim views, but really secluded and very nice with the trees, and great hammock spots!  Yes, I think they close the NE beginnig 2-1  for the perrigrins.  Also, but maybe no concern of you necessarily, is the chisos are much more traveled, and due to gegraphy, more of an 'enclosed' area....  I say that because if safety, either real or perceived, is an issue, I think solo female would do really great there as a first time -    You mention intense hiking, that would make for a great day jaunt from a chisos base camp down blue creek and back up.  I like that portion becasue of the rapid change in the ecosystems you traverse as you head down to desert floor.... and back up.   For a second backcountry trip (which I am sure you will be planning even while you are still doing the first one !) you could think about parking at Homer Wilson and treking out on the dodson for a day or two out, over night or two, and trek back.  I like that section because it lets you see exactly what the NPS means when the say that the Chihuahuan desert is 'lush' -  No matter what, you'll have a great time!!

It is the middle of winter - time to hike in the lower desert.  The Chisos are the coldest place in the park right now.  You can hike the South Rim in the middle of August and barely break a sweat (from heat).  Go hike the Chimneys, hike out to Mule Ears Spring, Top of Burro Mesa Pouroff, Devil's Den, Dog Canyon, Red Rocks, or go to Big Bend Ranch and hike Closed Canyon.

My truck is on the fritz  :icon_frown: so I'd have to try Pine Canyon Road some other time....but I'm thinking South Rim

I'm gonna find a picture of a hot babe for my avatar so I can get this kind of help.

MJ meant to say SE3, SE4, and NE5 (there is a long standing dispute between those who prefer the SE sites and those who prefer the SW sites). The SW sites are for those too weak to hike to the SE sites. The best view in Texas is from the big rock ledge near SE3 & 4.

Unfortunately, NE5, SE3 & SE4 (and SE2, but it sucks, never stay there) close on February 1 and don't open until June. NE3, NE4 and SE1 and those wimpy SW sites are all pretty spectacular anyway. The south rim is like half of the Grand Canyon.

Sounds like you just need to get your butt up there in the Chisos and explore for a few days. You won't regret it and then you'll know for yourself. I think the Chisos is the best place to start in Big Bend. When you are thoroughly addicted you'll be ready for the desert.

Absolutely. These are some of the fine ladies here on this chatboard that you DON"T have to convince to go to Big Bend. Try and show a little respect.

Sorry, I'm a jerk.

But you can't deny that the cute avatars get more attention...

These got a bit of attention. And although Shane is looking quite dapper these days, I think that bdann's dirt road avatar is the cutest....

Why thank you there Chisos Muse, and if I might say so, your new pic with the puppy dog is quite jaunty as well.    :icon_cool:
