Post-Thanksgiving Trip
« on: May 29, 2011, 04:23:14 PM »
I missed my spring trip this year due to family matters. Things are settling down and I plan to make a fall trip to BB. I just reserved site 41 (my fav!) for 6 nights starting right after the Thanksgiving holiday! I'm assuming that the crowds will all be departing the Sat and Sun after Thanksgiving so it will hopefully be relatively quiet when I'm there. This will be my first experience with the new Basin campground layout. Any feedback/tips on the new campground design?

Considering a one night backpack to or through Black Rock Canyon. By that time of the year, it should be cool enough to handle the hike in and back out. Or, if it's still a little too warm, maybe I'll do Emory as a day hike...or as an overnight, staying at Toll Mountain. Or, I'll just hang out in the Basin doing shorter day hikes wherever desire leads me. Maybe Ward Spring. Maybe Devil's Den. Depends on how much of each night I spend looking at stars. If the nights are good for star gazing, I may be too pooped for a lot of daytime extertion.

Whatever I end up doing, I definitely need this trip. Only 6 months away!!

Ooh!  I would like to suggest the Blue Creek Trail.  Blue Creek is an awesome trail going through Red Rocks Canyon, a very nice woodsy/creek area, then a climb up to elevation at its end.  The views back down as one ascends are very nice. The change from desert to pine trees is very cool.
Ah Big Bend, we will soon return to reacquaint ourselves in our ritual of blood, exhaustion and dehydration. How can we resist the temptation to strip ourselves of the maladies of civilization?

Thanks for the suggestion homer67.
I've been as far as the red rocks area but never past there. Might be a good hike to try. What's the elevation gain?
 Thanks!

Hi QS!
Red hoodoos? Haven't heard of hoodoos out that way. I've been as far as the red rocks...are the hoodos further along the Blue Creek Trail? Have to check Google Earth.

QS, you are the poster person for the get-fit-at-any-age idea. Your trip to the Grand Canyon proves that! :notworthy: I'm just now getting back into a fitness routine. We moved into a new house in February and all of that kept me from making my spring BB trip this year. It also got me off of a regular exercise routine. Now that we're settled into the new home, I'm hitting the treadmill and streets more regularly trying to get back into hiking shape. I've also recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer so being in better shape will help with recovery from whatever treatment I finally choose. So I have even more reason to try to stay in decent shape. Indeed, so little time.

Ok, my GPS shows the Homer Wilson Ranch house at 4191 ft and the BL1 campsite at 6670 ft; BL1 is very near the end of the Blue Creek trail. So the elevation change between these two points is 2479 ft.  However, there was a slight descent on the trail from about 6800 down to BL1 near the end.

My avatar is a photo from Red Rocks Canyon!  There is also a cool cave along the trail which appeared to have its own trail leading up to it (I can't wait to check this out next time!):
