Our dearest and oldest friends are going to spend the week after Xmas with us out in the Bend.  They are kind of friends who have seen us at our best and worst and who still love us.  They wanta get as much of a BiBe experience as possible.

Here is my proposal:

Leave Sunday and drive as far as Junction.

Monday; (i) take a scheduled tour of Kickapoo Caverns, (ii) eat one of those great, fresh sandwiches at French Grocer in Marathon for a late lunch, (iii) drive around a bit and enjoy dinner in the Basin, and (iv) head for our motel at Terlingua.

Tuesday - west end of the park; (i) Santa Elana Canyon, (ii) Costollon, (iii) Mule Ears,  (iv) Blue Creek as far as the red rocks - I love the Red Rocks area as the sun goes down, and (v) dinner at the Starlight.

Wednesday - east end of the park; (i) Pine Canyon, (ii) lunch at Boquillas, (iii) Boquillas Canyon, and (iv) star gazing at the Hot Springs hotel.

Thursday - the Basin; (i) the Window - unless they beg me to do the Lost Mine, and (ii) something else.

Friday - begin returning home; (i) Seminole Canyon afternoon tour.

Questions:

Is there a way to begin with the Window Trail and then connect to any trails below the window and then end up down on the Ross Maxwell?

Isn't there going to be a Bender during that time?

Leave "quit" at the car.  Embrace the trail as your friend.  Expect to enjoy yourself, and to be amazed.

Sounds like a thorough but sane plan.

Yes you can take the Oak Spring trail down to the Cattail falls/Oak spring parking lot, not too far off the RMSD and across from the Sam Nail ranch.  Of course you would have to have two vehicles or someone pick you up.  Maybe the Lodge folks.

Indeed a BBC gathering Monday-Wed. with the main gathering spot at a group campsite in the Basin.  Would be a shame if we couldn't all meet each other!

So...am I to understand that there will be a BBC shindig in the Basin camping area?

If you ask the people at the desk in the lodge the day before you need it, they can (probably) arrange a shuttle in order to leave your vehicle at the Cattail parking lot and drive you back to the basin for the Window- Oak Creek trail. Last time I did it, it cost $50. Plus you can squeeze in a walk to the falls.

Here is the thread with the details.  Casa Grande has reserved group site P which will probably be the unofficial headquarters even though folks will be spread all over the park.
