OK...here are how our plans for our trip to Big Bend in a few weeks are shaping up.  Shanea...your approval is requested.

Day 1 -- Head out to Del Rio for our midway stopping point.  Spend the night in Acuna and take in the sights and scenes of Acuna.
Day 2 -- Up early the next morning (7AM or so) to head to Big Bend.  Get there about 11AM...head out on the Lost Mine Trail and maybe do the Basin Loop trail that evening.
Day 3 -- Head for the Chimneys Trail and Burro Mesa Pour-Off early morning and probably a hike down to the Homer Wilson ranch house.  That afternoon, just lounge around the cabin and take it easy.
Day 4 -- Do the Window Trail and in the afternoon, head over to Terlingua/Study Butte for some pics and sightseeing.
Day 5 -- Pine Canyon Pour-off and then lounge around the basin.
Day 6 -- head to Presidio (lunch at El Alamo in Presidio...thanks Shane for the recommendation) and spend the night in Marfa.  Take in the Marfa Lights.
Day 7 -- return home.

Sounds outstanding.  When will you be there?  If you are there when we are there, be sure to stop by and say hi.

APPROVED

If you stop at the Pecos River bridge, be sure and snap a few pics of the water level.  From what I understand, the water level is way up from what it used to be - a stream.  I always enjoyed seeing the blue water of Amstead - always wanted to rent a houseboat and tour around for a lifetime, I bet "marina" gas is out-of-site these days.

Thanks, Shanea!

Will be out there in mid-June.  When are y'all going to be there?

Will definitely take the pics at Amistad and the Pecos River Bridge.  We have always wanted to stop there on the way up and go to the overlook.  In years past, we have just sped on by.  This year, our trip will be a bit slower and measured and we will be taking in sights and sounds on the way.  Plus...got a new digital camera on order that I will be using this year, so I will definitely load up on the pics this year!

And remember:  " When you come to Mexico, drink beer....but,......."
Stay thirsty, my friends.

Tail end of May just before Memorial Day weekend.  Too bad, I'll save some scenery for you to see.

Just be sure and hit the Chimneys trail as early as possible.  It turns into a furnace pretty quick.  We did it in mid May in 2000 and the temp was about 110 by noon.  Another tip is to load your water bottles/bags with as much ice as you can stuff into them.

Sounds like a great plan, BBH! It's amazing that looking at 7 days time spent  STILL doesn't seem like enough! 8)

yeah, i'll second what Richard said, do Chimney's early as it will be very hot. Also, if you're going to hangout down at the Homer Wilson Foreman House, you might as well take nice stroll down the Blue Creek Canyon Trail through the Red Rock...very nice hike, but again, it will be hot!  have fun!

Thanks, all, for the suggestions.

Plans for the Chimneys Trail are to be on the trail head before sunrise so that we can get to the Chimney's themselves by about 7:30AM.  The heat can and is unbearable in the desert regions in the summer at any time past 10AM or so and we would like to be back at our truck by then...
