Trip with my dad.....
« on: August 06, 2006, 04:14:45 PM »
Planning a trip to BIBE with my dad around end of August. We want to stay in Terlingua area this time. I've seen all the relevant websites for the various places to stay there, but there is nothing like first-hand information from those who have already been there. Recommendations anyone?

Motel question

I have used the Big Bend Motor Inn in Terlingua nice well kept rooms doing chili cookoff, most of the rest of the year it is quite. Undertaker

PS If I remember it has RV hookups, not for sure been a couple of years since I stayed in a motel while in BB area.
Visiting BB since 1966, nothing like being lost and finding heaven.

The Easter Egg Cabins are cheap, clean and fairly secluded with a nice view of the Chisos.  The motel rooms there are a bit close together for my taste.  They are also darn near walking distance to the La Kiva one of my favorite watering hole/eating joints.  Saw on their website that they are renting some houses close by as well for a bit more $$.  If you can afford the rates check out Terlingua house and La Posada Milagro.  These really look cool and are in primo locations.  I would love to hear someones experience with lodging at either of these places.

Undertaker - Thanks! Looked at BB Motor Inn's website. Rooms look ok, but I did not see a room rate schedule anywhere. Guess I will call them this week.

Woodrow - Easter Egg Valley is obviously the place that everyone seems to know about. I have been by it several times but never stayed there. Just has a look to it like it might not be very good. Their website and room pictures don't look too bad, but I've learned hard lessons about room photos on websites. :? Glad to hear from someone who has stayed there that it is better than it looks from the outside. :)

i've never stayed at the Moter Inn, but I've certainly used their showers in the back!  very nice and clean, indeed.

Yeah...the website said something about pay-showers there. That's always good to know about.

Yep, found that one and several others. I am looking for info from folks that have actually stayed at any of these places. I learned the hard way about judging a place strictly by what is on their website. Been unpleasantly surprised on more than one occasion.

I usually stay at the Motor Inn;  it's close, rooms $60-70.  EasterEgg/ Chisos Mining a little less expensive, a little less nice.  Wild Horse Station you get trailer/cabin which has kitchen etc.  which can come in kind of handy.   Terlingua Ranch is OK but a is about 45 min. drive back to park.
El Dorado is to be avoided, IMO, due to price.

My brothers and I stayed at the Easter Egg/Chisos Mining co. place awhile back.  We got a cabin with 3 beds, kitchen, and a clean bathroom for $60.  Just don't stay at the El Dorado and I think you'll be ok.
WATER, It does a body good.

That seems to be the consensus about the El Dorado. What's up with this place?

it's dirty.  that's the main thing I didn't like, and the doors to the rooms are made out of wooden planks nailed together.  More like a fence gate than a door.

So is Dad going to come visit you in your new digs?
As a matter of fact, I _do_ have an opinion on that....

I am planning a trip with my father for 4 nights the second weekend of October.  I want to stay in Terlingua at least Saturday night.

Will it be hard to get a campsite at Basin this time of year?  We will drag in about 6 PM on Friday.
