Tune Up Trip
« on: February 13, 2009, 08:13:21 PM »
I'm T-minus 43 days from my next trip to BB! Sooooo...I thought I'd take a Tune Up Trip to try out a couple of things that are new to me before heading out to the Bend. This will allow me to get used to a new tent and a new sleeping bag.

It will also give me some trail time with a new pair of shoes and a new pack that I hope to use on a hike to the Split Rock camp site on the Marufo Vega trail. Better to find out early whether the shoes will be okay. If not, then I'll fall back on my trusty hiking boots. Given the relatively "easy" part of the MV trail I plan to do, I'm hoping the shoes will be okay. Same with the pack...it should be okay but a little hiking with it before the "real" hike would be good.

I have a new wide angle camera lens to try out so I'm thinking a quick weekend trip to Enchanted Rock will give me a chance to shake everything out before heading to the Bend in late March. The trails and camping and scenery out at ER should be just the thing to get me used to all of the new "goodies". I haven't camped at ER in about 6 years so a return visit will be nice. Pics to follow in a couple of weeks, assuming the weather cooperates on the dates I'll be at ER.

Hey Bill -

Nothing better than a 'shake-down' trip to work out any kinks in new gear.  I usually hit the Wichita Mtns wildlife refuge which is about 90 mins away from me for testing new gear.  It sure beats finding something seriously wrong but knowing your car is only an hour or so away rather than being a full days hike away from your car on the MV trail.

Good luck,

Darin
