Stay and Car Rental Options at Alpine
« on: February 14, 2016, 02:39:18 PM »
I am planning to take the Amtrak from San Antonio to Alpine. Two questions:

1) Are there trust worthy car rentals in Alpine? if so, can you share contactS?

2) Any suggestions for stay options in Alpine?

Thanks

Alpine is the home of Sul Ross State University and some regional governmental offices.  It is a very small town.  But, due to being about the only sizable town around, has a couple of middling motels.
Leave "quit" at the car.  Embrace the trail as your friend.  Expect to enjoy yourself, and to be amazed.

Any suggestions for stay options in Alpine?
Well there is tripadvisor, so I'm assuming that you are inquiring about non chain type hotels with which we have personal experience.
I've stayed at (4 times) the Maverick Inn on the east side of town, which I thought was very nice in a rustic adobe western way (limited but tasty continental Bkfst with very good coffee). Then for a no frill place (I've stayed here twice) at almost half the price (spotty WiFi, somewhat snowy TV) that is reasonably clean and bed bug free is La Loma Inn
on the west side of town. (Why it's listed under Bed and Breakfast ? I have no idea.) I think last time I was there they had a microwave, mini fridge, coffee maker in the room.

Hopefully the rental place will pick you up as it's a long walk from the train station. I'd call and make sure of all your local transportation needs prior to train boarding.  Amtrak on time performance could be improved, but don't hold your breath for it to happen. Two hours late is not typical, but it's not unheard of either.

I recommend this site for Amtrak status: http://dixielandsoftware.net/Amtrak/status/StatusMaps/

fm's Restaurant recommendations:  Italian=La Trattoria;  Mexican=Los Jalapenos Cafe (tasty food but slow service, they have soda from Mexico with real sugar  :great: ); Gourmet Cowboy = Reata; Breakfast=Judy's Bread and Breakfast
Restaurants to avoid peek in and make your own evaluation: Panda Buffet.
