I saw a guy with a rented sedan at the PJ gas station once that had managed to knock the oil pan drain plug out while driving on a dirt road.  He was on the phone with the rental company most of the time I was there (getting a tire plugged), he was not a happy camper.  Honestly, I have no idea how he made it to the gas station.  The car was sitting barely in the parking area with a big black puddle underneath.  I wonder how much that ended up costing him? 

I rented a Toyota Camry once from Avis and the rental agent told me "no unpaved roads".  Had never been told that before and not since; though I had read that in the contracts before.  ...didn't stop me though.

It's been a number of years, but I once rented a car in Colorado Springs with the express purpose of heading up Pike's Peak;  part of the road is unpaved.  I told the rental agent what I was going to do,  he recommended a Firebird with the 400 V8.  I didn't bother to read the fine print, but noone said there was a problem. 
And, yeah, the 'bird was sucking wind the last mile or so.
