Juniper Canyon Road Access, Water
« on: February 15, 2009, 10:00:05 PM »
Hi everyone. We're heading to Big Bend from Alabama at the end of this week. We want to hike the Outer Mountain Loop, and are wondering if we can access the eastern trailhead of the Dodson trail on Juniper Canyon Road (I think that's its name) with a Honda Accord. Also, any current info water availability at Dodson Springs, Fresno Creek, Boot Springs, or anywhere else along the route? Thanks in advance.

it will be tough to get the accord back there as there are some spots that are pretty rough. you will need to take it slow and easy. lots or rocks baseball size or bigger on the road

if you have low profile tires it would be best to not take this road.

I doubt an Accord has the clearance to go up Juniper Canyon road.  Fresno was running last report.

an accord might be a little sketchy getting back there.  might make it, but I wouldn't count on it 100%.

from the sounds of things here, Fresno will be about the only water you can count on.  Dodson is almost cetainly dry.  Boot Springs is probably dry as well.  There might be some pools of water up in Boot Canyon.

Fresno is probably your only source of water of the ones you mentioned. I would not advise driving an Accord on the Juniper Canyon Rd. From what I could see of the road from the trailhead, there is some considerable rutting and some pretty formidable rocks laying all over the roadbed. You'd probably end up damaging your vehicle. Not a good place to have a car breakdown, for sure.

The trailhead parking area didn't look too bad, but looking down the road a bit I could see some ruts that could be trouble:

Thanks for taking the time to reply, everyone. Thanks for the excellent information as well. We didn't think we'd be able to get the Accord back there, but figured we'd ask.

It's been done with worse vehicles, but that doesn't mean it was a good idea.

The road will be tough on the Accord.  The rocks on this road seem to be the sharpest in the park.  The washes may be the really daunting part.  What clearance you have will be gone as you drop into a wash.  Tows are expensive if you get hung up in a wash.

Stacie,

What part of Bama you from. We're around Huntsville and heading out the 20th for BIBE and will be there til the 27th. Might run into you there. We won't be hiking much beyond a dayhike or two, but will be on lots of the backcountry roads in the jeep.
