Reaching Terlingua From Ocotillo Grove
« on: September 15, 2011, 08:02:53 PM »
I have heard lots of opinions re Old Maverick Road, but have never been on it - will be in BiBe from NC in a few weeks and camping at Ocotillo.  It looks tempting to get to Terlingua by just driving those few miles up Maverick in m Subaru Outback, but is it a suspension destroying bone jarring exercise and would it be actually almost just as quick to drive up the RMSD?  Any additional thoughts on driving it after dark?

An easy drive -- every time I've been on it.

I drove it last December and it was in great shape.  You could have driven a Cadillac down it.  Of course, the rains since then could have wreaked havoc if it wasn't subsequently maintained.

I'm sure a call to the Visitor's Center would answer your question.

I drove it last week.

The lower thirtd is washboardy, but not too bad.  The middle third is pretty rough in spots, but you should be able to do it.  The upper third is no problem whatsoever.
Wake me when it's time to go.

About how much time does it take to get to Terlingua from the Ocotillo/Terlingua sites up the Maverick Rd?  And are there pay showers there or only for camp or hotel guests?

Figure an easy 30 minutes and there are pay showers in Study Butte.
