Road to Mariscal Mine district
« on: March 04, 2009, 04:10:05 PM »
We'll be heading to the Bend next week and this is one area we'd like to explore. Last New Year's we made the full length of Old Ore Road in our suburban. Reckon we'll have any problems going to the mines in it? I know we'll be hitting some washes and that the long wheelbase could give us some hiccups. I know "ask the rangers", but I trust you guys to be more accurate/truthful sometimes.

The Ranger that advised us to do the Old Ore road wasn't too concerned if we made it or not. "You can always turn around if you feel worried you can't make it." Yeah, right. :rolleyes:Like I could turn my suburban around on that road!  It was barely wide enough in spots that I have scatches down both sides from all the plant life!

So, any suggestions?

Depends on how the flooding effected the road.
Before the National Guard worked on the road, I made it out to the mine in a 2-wheel drive pickup.
I'll be the jump start for the car parked in your mind, 'Cause you left the lights on all night long.

you should be ok. I made it in my chevy trailblazer going down glenn springs road to the mine. Its real nasty near the glenn springs camp site but after that is was not bad at all.

when we came out, we took the river road towards RGV and I did have a slight problem getting out of one of the washes, but your suburban should do ok as it is higher than my Trailblazer.

As alway.... ask about current road conditions

If you go River road east you will have no problems.  We drove a Corolla to the mines a couple of weeks ago.

On Feb. 20th, we had no problem traveling river road east to Fresno in a 2-wheel drive Explorer. Just don’t get in a hurry and you should be fine.

Ditto Al.  No problemo.  As long as there has not been a big rain since the begining of Feb.  I drove a brand new Corrola in and out via River Road to RGV without bottoming once.  Just be cautious at the washes and don't drive too fast.  Some come up on you real suddenly.

Sounds good! Thanks for the quick replies! I'll be sure to ask but I doubt there's been any (nor will there be any) rain before we get there. And we will take our time. That's the only way to do it in the Bend!

Just did this drive yesterday (posting tonight due to a trip cut short.... *##$(#% car trouble, not related to the offroading).  River Road East is really not a difficult road at all, especially for something high clearance.  There is roadwork being done on River Road West through Friday, by the way, so it is closed this week but is supposed to open 3/6 (just FYI).

Need a 2010 update on river road east to Marsical Mine.  I plan to be there on April 1st and hope to be able to drive my 2W drive Dodge Dakota pickup to the mines.
Has anybody been there recently?
