BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK - Big Bend National Park has issued a temporary closure of the center section of Old Maverick Road.

The closure will allow needed improvements to a low-water crossing that is subject to flooding and washouts.

Improvements will include the installation of articulated concrete mats to improve future access at the crossing.

Through traffic was temporarily suspended between Terlingua Abajo and the Chimneys Trailhead starting Monday, and the closure is expected to last at least two weeks.

Access will still be possible from the southern end of the road as far as the Terlingua Abajo side road and campsites. Access will also be possible from the northern end of the road down to the Chimneys Trailhead.

Old Maverick Road will be reopened as soon as improvements and work are completed.

In January the washboarding was so bad even the Top Gear guys would've avoided it...
