Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute / CDRI

I spent a day checking out the cdri. Very cool place. First I hiked down into modesto canyon, fantastic hike. Starts in the grasslands at the visitors center then descends down into an arroyo. The shade picks up, then you hit the spring. Maiden hair fern cover the moistest spots, while Tracy hawthorns and southwestern cherries provide shade. Be sure and pick a trail guide at the visitors guide for a description of the flora and fauna.
After exiting the canyon you can loop back or continue on to a geology exhibit. Go to the the exhibit! There you'll be rewarded with a 360 degree view of the surrounding davis mountains. Think expansive grasslands with mountains all around. There are six signs explaining the geologic history of the area. The canyon and exhibit are reason enough to visit, but, then there is the Botanical   Garden also. If your a plant nerd, like me, you'll enjoy this. The garden is very well kept and labeled. This is a unique piece of property  run by a small group of dedicated people. Check it out cdri.org

jim2, you're dead-on with your description.

CDRI is a very beautiful and well-maintained place indeed. Very helpful staff, back in Sep. 2013 I had spent some time taking photos in the Botanical Garden, not watching for the labels and unable to ID many plants upon my return home. I mailed them some of the pics and they were happy to ID them for me.
