But when I was about 38, 39, the Lord started working on me, saying, 'Hey ... remember Me?' So when I was 40, I finally said, 'I surrender — You want me to be a pastor? I surrender, Lord.' " Mark Sprague is the pastor at High Desert Baptist Church in Marathon, Texas, a town of 550 people just north of Big Bend. A big congregation on Sunday night is maybe eight to 12 people."I'll be honest with you. There's some days I wake up, and I go, 'I don't know what I'm doing this for.' It's usually Monday morning. You know what they say — preachers always quit on Monday. I'm like, 'How in the world are we going to pay our bills this month?' And then all of a sudden, something comes in from some folks I never met before, and the Lord kind of cracks me in the back of the head and says, 'Now if you'd just listened to Me in the first place; I told you I'd take care of you.'"And then you get to sit down with a young man who has been in prison twice and has just had a real tough life, and you work on him and you pray with him — and the tears start rolling down his face, and he puts his faith in the Lord. Hey, the bumps in the road that I got to go through — you know what? They're gone. The Lord has a way of, when I start feeling sorry for myself, He says, 'Hey, you remember that guy? You remember the guy you got to lead to the Lord? Hey ... it's all worth it.' "- Mark Sprague.Cowboy. Pastor. Texan.
