Athene Cunicularia
« on: June 26, 2019, 04:36:23 PM »
The prairie dog town about 10 miles north of Marathon is a well known burrowing owl location. Although I can usually find one, finding one on a fencepost and willing to sit still (for two frames anyway) is a bit of good luck.
Cheers,
Imre

Outstanding photo Imre.  Are they not nocturnal ?   So, how do I get to the prairie dog town ? 10 miles north of Marathon on 385 , I guess ?  Which side of the road ? or both sides ? Any signs or landmarks ?

Used my search engine on Imre's phrase, "prairie dog town about 10 miles north of Marathon" as follows:

https://duckduckgo.com/?q=prairie+dog+town+about+10+miles+north+of+Marathon&atb=v131-1&ia=web

From glancing at the first hit:

https://www.bigbendnature.com/2010/09/birding-marathon-tx.html

I learned that

Quote
Hwy 385 Prairie Dog Town
Located 10 miles north of the 385/Hwy 90 intersection, unmarked gravel pullout on both sides of the road.

and realized that I know the spot, but had no idea why it was there!  :great:

Alan:
Burrowing owls tend to be active during the day. Just drive north on highway 395 about 10 miles from Marathon:
https://ebird.org/hotspot/L295948
The prairie dog town is on both sides of the road. There is at least one turnout with an exhibit, although not about the prairie dogs.
Cheers
Imre
P.S. It has been there for at least 30 years!

Another photograph of a burrowing owl, taken at the same location 25 years ago, using an ancient lost technology known as "Kodachrome."
Cheers,

Thanks Imre and Flash.   Another tribute to my "non-attentiveness". I have been past that place  - going and coming- 100 times and not noticed it.  But ..... I will stop there twice on my next trip !

I've always been in too big a hurry to get to the park. I'll have to put it on my list. Gotta stop and smell the prairie dogs!
