Does anyone know what this old brick building was and any history pertaining to it?

Does anyone know what this old brick building was and any history pertaining to it?

Knowing "where" it is in town might reveal some clues as to function.

Off hand it resembles a hotel. The upstairs clearly has a central hallway and the little bit that can be seen through the left front window seems to mirror the front right room. All the upstairs rooms seem to be of similar, small size, with one window per room. The small window on the right side surely appears to be a bathroom window.

A google image search produced another view of the building, but no information.

Probably stating the obvious, but it looks to me like a classic gas station and general store downstairs with family quarters upstairs kind of arrangement that popped up at US highways junctions in the 30's and 40's.

It's on 170 when you come into town right where it takes a sharp left toward the border.

In town this building is called 'the red hotel'.  It is 3 blocks south of the old Santa Fe RR tracks and served as overnight accomodations to visitors off of the trains coming to presidio or leaving Chihuahua.  Until last year there was the remains of one of Presidio's oldest department stores just across the street.  Lived here a long time.

Address is corner of Millington and 4th Street. I believe it was built during the 1930s when the railroad was completed through Presidio.

I'm always surprised at what I learn on this board. Thanks for sharing your local knowledge.

I have driven through there many times and wondered what the history was for both places.
Google Earth street view still shows the Department Store remains from Jan. 2008.

Thanks for sharing.
