hahahaha, thats the crazy old coot that came into the Starlight theater one night when Stingrey and I were there this past August, he was holding his cane like a gun and said " Everybody freeze, this is a stick up!!"

one family actually got scared, he tried to calm them down, but when he said he used to be a terrorist, but grew out of it, they got freaked out again. Me, Rey and a few of the locals were laughing pretty good at the event.

Having spent some more time browsing Dr. Doug's website, this has to be the premier Terlingua website. An INCREDIBLE amount of work went into this.  Butch Hancock endorsing, etc.

Man, that chick on right looks totally whacked. I guess that makes her the perfect spokes-freak for mental health in Terlingua.

Terlingua the mental health black hole of the Big Bend area, still I love the place, don't know how that reflects on me but then again I don't give a damn.

As an amateur astronomer who likes to look at very, very faint galaxies, I concur with Dr. Doug's sentiment!  :eusa_clap: I even plan my trips to BB around new moon so it will be as dark as possible.

Ehhh...just something I threw together.  :eusa_whistle: I built the bigger scope.

What are your favorable stellar objects that you have seen while in Big Bend?

Al

This time of the year, Orion has a lot of good things to look at, especially the Orion nebula. In the spring, it always blows me away to look at Omega Centauri. Any time of the year it's challenging to hunt down little faint galaxies at the limit of observability. Sometimes not much to look at but then you consider how far away some of them are and it's incredible that the light has been travelling for billions of years and finally reaches my eye to be seen. Makes me feel like a little tiny pin prick in the universe.

It's really kind of amazing. Go to your local Salvation Army and you can find hundreds of crazy old drunks like this guy and no one cares.  But, you take just one of them and put him in Terlingua and he's suddenly "unique."

As we speak I am dosing myself with Negra Modelo and listening to Yankee Hotel Foxtrot in an effort to prepare myself for the nights entertainment (http://www.cedarparkcenter.com/fetures/index.html?article_id=3).  I feel pretty happy.  Not as happy as the whacked out chick, but pretty happy.

About Cynta, she is quite a lady, though maybe a little uninhabited at times.  Cynta showed up in Terlingua somewhere around '96 to '98 and was a river guide for original Far Flung in the Ghostown.  Before long she had built one of the better and neater houses in the area.  No, not in the ghostown.   She had been a Debutant in NYC and is very well-educated.  Cynta has helped alot of folks in addition to the following:

Cynta and another lady started the Boquillas Quilt Project and raised lots of $, donations, and sold quilts in the BB for the folks of Boquillas after the "infamous" May 10th 2002 BP actions in the BB.  They would take lots of $ and other donations,(the long way) and to pick up the quilts of cottage industry of making quilts organized by Cynta, to Presidio, Ojinaja, San Carlos, (and then the roads really get bad) on to Boquillas many, many times.  Recently, US Customs has determined these efforts can't be continued.

Cynta also started and organizes the well-attended annual reunion each fall of folks who grew up or worked in Terlingua before the mines closed around 1948.

Oh yes, i vouch for the labor of the lady, she has done many things for Boquillas del Carmen. I don't know much about the roads coming from Ojinaga all the way to Boquillas, but i can tell you the roads coming in from Acu?a or Piedras Negras all the way down to Cuesta de Malena  are a cake walk. From then on to Ejido Jaboncillos, Las Norias then on to Boquillas are very well leveled. They are still dirt roads, but exceptionally maintained.

Maybe it is time for Cynta to head back to Boquillas and pick up a big load of quilts , so she can continue her business. U.S. Customs can not say there is wrong doing in bringing the quilts the right way. It is a hassle, but doable.

I know of a better way to do this,if interested. There is a bus that goes once a week to Boquillas, they can send the quilts by bus all the way to Piedras Negras and we can find a way to cross the quilts, legally, to the U.S.
