Wait ... Mr. and Mrs. Perry had separate rooms?

Probably for the best.
“The story goes, Mrs. Perry finally came down from Maine. She spent one night, and said, ‘I’ve seen enough,’” said Bill Ivey, who owns most of the Terlingua ghost town and is refurbishing the old mansion.

I just finished reading Rawles Williams historical novel, Boquillas Crossing. If Rawles was even halfway faithful to the true history, the anecdote above doesn’t surprise me in the least.

Worth reading in my opinion:
https://www.amazon.com/Quicksilver-Terlingua-Chisos-Mining-Company/dp/0890961883/ref=sr_1_fkmrnull_1?keywords=quicksilver+ragsdale&qid=1552040073&s=gateway&sr=8-1-fkmrnull

I agree - lots of detail about folks who's names I'd heard of but didn't know how significant they were to Terlingua or the area. I came away with a respect for Howard Perry although he was not portrayed as a likeable fellow.

Yes, I know what you mean. But, having just arranged pre- and post- hike lodging for my next trip, I have to say it isn't that far out of line with what I paid: $183 (incl. taxes) for one of the Roosevelt Cottages and $186 (incl taxes) for the cheapest room at the Gage Hotel in Marathon. True, I could've spent these nights at the Chisos campground but at my age after 2-3 nights sleeping on the ground I'm ready for clean sheets and a shower.  And yes, I could've found cheaper lodging in Terlingua/Study Butte, but that would make my return to Austin a longer drive and I get to  the park only once or twice at most in a year and I convince myself I can splurge a little on lodging.

I should add that I didn't have a lot of choices when I made these arrangements, though I was planning 12 weeks in advance of an early November hike. That's why I'll be driving to Marathon after my OML hike though I would've preferred a room in the Basin.  The Perry Mansion by the way has plenty of openings on almost any date you choose, probably because they are at the high end of Terlingua/Study Butte lodging alternatives.
