This was posted on their facebook page.....
Well, folks- I hate to say it but its true. After nearly 20 years serving the best food and throwing the best parties in South West Texas, we are closing our doors. Our last night will be Saturday, September 25th. We want to thank you for all the great memories.
What a shame. Will really miss it....... :icon_cry:
-
Why?!?! That's just awful!!! :icon_frown:
-
Sorry to hear that. Visits to the park just won't be the same. Unfortunately the timing does not allow for one last visit.
-
:icon_cry: This just can't be true
-
oh rats....thats gonna bite. Starlight was my second favorite place out in the Bend, second only to the park

DAMN. That's really, really sad. My wife and I were just there at the start of the month. We love that place. Been going there for 6 years.
-
Wow....this is truly sad news for the Big Bend community in so many ways. I hope that a person passionate about the area and it's people can take it over soon...
-
Very fond memories of that place....

Nice pics. So sorry to hear about the Starlight, some good memories there.

It was for sale several years ago. I checked into it with some others. Only the restaurant, furnishings, kitchen were for sale - along with the name and whatever patrons showed up. The building itself was not included in the package and was not for sale. Fairly decent cash flow if I recall from the spreadsheet I got from Chad. Didn't actually get to see the books. The asking price was way too much - especially since it didn't include the building. Certainly wouldn't get rich - you've got a short high season and a very long low season to survive - just like anyplace out that way. Chad also owns the Boathouse, or did at that time. Certainly didn't want to get into the restaurant business w/o the building and only a handshake on the lease. I talked with Ivy and he didn't see any need for a lease, a handshake would do. :eusa_snooty: and then to be in competition with the Boat House and the same owner... Ran, not walked, away from that one. :eusa_boohoo:

Was just in the Starlight over Labor Day weekend with friends, first trip for two of them, sad, No Starlight no Border Crossing, Sad Very Sad Day.
-
That's where we had Christmas dinner last year (or was it Chirstmas Eve?) We really enjoyed our one and only visit there.
-
This is AWFUL!!! What will life be like without a Diego Burger after a long hike? I can't fathom...Wish I were rich...I'd buy that place and get drunk(err... inebriated) with Dr. Doug on the porch every day!! Sad, Sad day.
-
These are hard times . . . especially in the desert . . .
Al
-
That's a bummer, I will miss the Diego Burger and listening to the locals play music. It won't be worth the drive out anymore just to hang out on the Front Porch. I can understand why it closed though - a marginal business 6 months of the year. Maybe Ivey can get someone else to take it over or start up something new there. TWWG
-
Seems a little odd to close up right before what passes as the 'busy season'... :icon_confused:
-
My wife and I were just there over Labor Day weekend ourselves! We ate there three times during our 5 night stay. Surely someone will buy this Terlingua icon. I noticed that I didn't see Chad around when we were there. I hope that it's either not true or that someone will buy it soon! That's our favorite place to eat!
-
If it is a matter of simple economics, it would make more sense for Chad to
close the Boathouse and keep the Starlight open, instead of closing the
Starlight then making the Boathouse a "full service restaurant on Monday".
The Starlight has been there too long and has the best food in town!
-
We do not know all the factors. I agree the starlight has way better food. But its not the place it was then it was a Bar that Served food. Vrs a restaurant that has a bar it has become. Rent could have been escalated, food cost increased, or they lost their Insurance. Boat House has been a great place also but would need work to make it a full restaurant.
-
If anyone's online right now, John Wells (The Field Lab) has his "stickcam" set up in the Starlight and is broadcasting live video:
http://www.stickam.com/thefieldlab (http://www.stickam.com/thefieldlab)
Wish I was there!
-
Yes, I saw on Mr. Wells' blog that he was going to do that, but I didn't get
to see it myself. Can we get a report from anyone out there who may
have attended the Starlight Theatre's closing night? I'm sure we would all
like to know what happened and if Chad gave out any additional details.
-
I'm saddened to hear this. Clay Henry, the border, paso lajitas, the developer destroying lajitas now this. :willynilly:
i hope the adjacent general store plans to remain open for business.
guess i need to figure out which businesses are of heritage and support just them.
i'm curious of plans to continue elsewhere or in the same place by others. i'm sure it will.

Thank you. Sounds like they trashed the place on the way out. Very Sad. Open it BYOB! for the short term.

I don't know a whole lot about this stuff, but if they took the stuff they brought then how is that a problem?

Thanks once again to Kathleen for this second update. Apparently, Bill
Ivey is wasting NO time!
In the Alpine Avalanche today...
"Application has been made with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission for a MIXED BEVERAGE PERMIT, by BILL C. IVEY. dba, STARLIGHT THEATER, to be located at 631 IVEY DRIVE, TERLINGUA, BREWSTER COUNTY, TEXAS. Officers of said corporation are BILL C. IVEY."

AL,
Taking out equipment you own is not an issue. But leaving a place that needs repairs that where not needed when you are open I bet is the issue. Reading this as a property manager, says "gutted" means to me stuff was removed in a hateful fashion, and not in a manor to all the next person to move in. Most commercial leases read that improvements (built in) shall stay. So I would expect everything not nailed down to stay. Bars, stage, stairs, benches (as they built in) and the kitchen should all be returned to white space meaning the next tenent could move in and set up shop rather easy.
I could set up a commercial kitchen in about one week provided we know the layout and where water, sewer, and gas was. Esp in a space that was a restaurant prior even in a remote area of the state like South Brewster. Now for the eating space it could take longer if more then comedic work is required.

We just happened to hear of the Starlight's closing the night before we left for our trip (Sept 22-29th); we were there early, waiting for them to open. We had a few beers and said our goodbyes to the Starlight. So sad to see it go, but I believe it will open again! One just has to love having a few cold ones on the porch at the Starlight.
-
According to a post on John Well's, The Field Lab blog, the Starlight has a tentative date to reopen of November 1, 2010 :icon_biggrin:
-
...and better yet, 2-for-1 burgers will be back!

Maybe this thread should be changed to "Starlight Opening"
Would be a more positive gesture for Bill Ivy and everyone!
-
This is great news.

This is great news! But did I miss something or is there an elephant in the room: What happened? And more specifically: is the stage mural ok.

DONE!
-
Sweet! What would an adventure to The Garden be without the Starlight?
-
Does anyone know if the Starlight is still slated to reopen on November 1st? I'm headed out that way next weekend. That would be a great ending for my trip.
-
I just called the Starlight and the phone just rang and rang and rang.
Can anybody say whether or not it has reopened?
-
It's open. Just got back from there.
-
Check out the Starlight Reopening, I'll be back! (http://www.bigbendchat.com/portal/forum/index.php?topic=10107.0) topic.
