What's happening with the food in Terlingua?
« on: January 24, 2011, 10:29:56 PM »
I just joined the forum so I'll say "hey" to all you big bend lovers.  I live out here full time so if you need the inside scoop I'm here for you.

Today I want to talk about dining.  There have been so many changes in the past year.  First something quite amusing.  If you enter south county through Alpine and travel down 118 you will notice a new painted sign on a very small building that reads "Coming Soon! Susie's Outwest Steakhouse" but alas the arrow points to a vacant lot.  A couple came in and decided that none of us down here knew how to cook a steak and they were going to show us.  They built a large wooden building in the Bee Mountain Plaza, working away, building their dynasty.  About a week from opening the couple gets in a violent fight with one another.  One of them goes to jail.  A few days later at 12pm, the restaurant burns to the ground.  Hmmm

The Starlight, Oh the beloved Starlight is back open again with pretty much the same menu and staff.  They tried to get beer on tap but have not succeeded with that. yet.  The menu changed, slightly, there is now a poor man's bowl of beans for $3.  Most notably is the renovated space, new chairs (wooden, wow!) new carpet, new paintings inside, the ceiling has been painted blue and it doesn't fall in your food anymore, a completely new kitchen (new floors and new kitchen sinks) and new hand painted tables!!!  Yes there are at least 10 new tables with their own local flair--be sure to check them out.  Oh yeah, and its non smoking now.

Of course we just recently lost the Boathouse as well but it will return soon with new vigor.

A brand new addition to the Ghost Town is the Ghost Town Saloon!  Right next to the Ghost Town Cafe we have a new bar, and they serve liquor (just what we needed!!)  Owned by the former owners of T-Bones (where Far Flung is now) They are grinding their wheels a little bit to get it going but it is such a GREAT SPACE and you should all stop in and show your support.  Pablo Menudo along with ranch pickers Jim and Anna play some great music every Thursday night and you should not miss it if you are in town.

Changes coming to La Kiva!  Well Glenn finally decided to do something about his deep fryer that he hated so much.  He is throwing it away and building a brick pizza oven.  A new, expanded menu without so much fried crap.  People I know are getting really sad about the chicken fried chicken sandwich and the catfish but I say "You know, Glenn was just watching his friends become fat drunken blobs and what was he gonna do, he can't get rid of the booze."  But don't mourn the loss of the fried crap, the BBQ will still exist, the steaks, we will now have salmon, we will have pizza, and we will have a special every night of the week like Lasagna!  mmmm Lasagna.  You can't get a noodle in this town unless you make it yourself.  I welcome the change and I hope you guys will stop in and check it out.  This is all happening around Feb. 6

Los Jalapenos opened this summer and is located at the Delia's Terlingua Store (the other one, not the trading company) and talk about mouth watering, cheesy, spicy, mexican goodness.  This rivals Tivos, you gotta go here too!!

The Roadrunner Deli has returned!  Located beside the Study Butte Store, the owner took a hiatus for a few years but has returned to make us some really awesome sammiches before we head into the park.

Oh my God there's more!!! India's cafe!!!!  Ever been to the Thirsty Goat in Lajitas and seen the picture of the naked lady behind the bar?  That's India!!  (ok while I think its cool I fully realize that some do not, but she's not making your food naked)  She has a really small cafe in Bee Mountain Plaza that is open for breakfast and lunch.  Delicious baked goods in the morning, incredible daily specials for lunch, and of course the beautiful smile of India and her wonderfully accented husband William.

And to those who have made no changes that I know of, Chili Pepper (get the picodillo plate), Rio Bravo (get the chili rellenos), BBMI (well they changed their name... get ice cream), KKKK (sno-cones!) High Sierra (BEST burger in town), La Posado Milagro (BEST coffee in town) and Long Draw Pizza (BEST pizza for 100 miles!)  Thank You for feeding us!!!!

What a great in depth review and report.  It is good to have you on the board.  I will be one that will miss at least the Chicken fried steak at La Kiva, the one I had last time was one of the best I have ever had.
temperatures exceed 100 degrees F
minimum 1 gallon water per person/day
no shade, no water

Can anyone comment on breakfast options?

My criteria are:

- Open early enough to eat & go hiking.
- Restrooms.
- Internet access. This one is not a must but for business purposes I occasionally need to check in & breakfast is a very convenient time.

Currently the only place I know that hits all of these three is BBMI - yuk!!! Would love to find an alternative, or at least one that hits the first two.

Hayduke, you can get it all at the Ghost Town Cafe and the food is good.

Kathy's Kosmic Kowgirl Kafe has great breakfast and she opens at 7:00 Thurs-Mon. but I don't know about the rest of the amenities

This is about the best thread on dining options in the area

Thanks, ME & QS. I'll give the Ghost town a try next time.

(BTW I've considered Kathy's but the lack of restrooms kept me away.)

Ah, but a camp fire on cool mornings and the BEST customers, not to mention the over the top wonderfulness of her wide variety of menu items, AND WiFi, I can find a bathroom later  :eusa_dance:

Grub Shack is not here or I missed it.  Open early with a stove to heat up.  Burrito the size of Jupiter will feed you for 3 days.  At 118 and the Terlingua Ranch Road north of Study Butte.

Voni,

I wholeheartedly agree with your sentiments and while I can certainly find a restroom later my personal plumbing is shouting, Now! One ignores the Call of Nature at great peril!

Yes we should also mention the Grub Shack and Tivo's north of Terlingua on 118 and the Candellia at Lajitas.  I just wasn't thinking that far out.

Does the Boathouse closing mean that Chad has left the area? When did that happen?

The Chisos Mining Company has always been a refuge in that type of storm.  Really close by. . .
