Houston to Prude Ranch with two 5 year olds
« on: May 06, 2008, 03:25:56 PM »
We're planning a trip at the end of the month to a wedding at Prude Ranch from Houston. We'll have our 2 5yr olds with us. We are looking for good places to stop and any suggestions would be appreciated.

thanks

There really is not much between Houston and Ft. Davis.

But here are some things to consider

Sonora Caverns in Sonora TX
http://www.cavernsofsonora.com/

Closer to Ft. Davis is Balmorhea State Park, which is supposed to have great swimming.

Once in Ft. Davis, you can go to the Ft. Davis Historic site.

Ft. Davis State park is nice

And the McDonald observatory is just north of the Prude Ranch, and well worth the visit.

Also before you get out there there is Alamo City movie set. I have never been, just im just throwing out ideas

We did a WTX road trip for spring break, ranging from Carlsbad, Ft. Davis & BIBE with our kids (someday I'll finish a complete report).  If you've never been out in the region, buy a copy of  Adventures in the Big Bend: A Travel Guide for good guide book of things to see and do.

For the drive out take lots of things for the kids:  DVDs, coloring books/notepads, music, travel games.  We carried lots of picnic and snack foods and ate on the roadside almost everyday.  We drove from Houston to Pecos (headed to the Monahans SP Sand Dunes) and stopped before Kerrville at a roadside park for lunch.

Bring your swimsuits (and snorkel gear if you have it) an be sure to spent a half a day at Balmorhea SP swimming in the spring pool. Its a neat oasis out there in the desert.  While in the Balmorhea area, eat at La Cueva De Oso for a pretty good meal (The Oso Flojo Lodge, next door and owned by the same family has nice accomodations if you need a place to stay).

Drive the scenic loop around the Davis mountains using the book to describe the features you'll pass.

Be sure to visit the state park and drive up Skyline drive to see the view to the SE down on Ft. Davis and to the park and McDonald observatory to the NW.

Visit the observatory star party one night for great views of the heavens.  Bring warm clothes as it gets chilly at night.

If you want to venture further south, you can spent time in Marfa and Alpine or even make the drive down into the Big Bend National Park.

On the way home, visit the Caves of Sonora and then stop for the night in San Antonio, with dinner on the riverwalk and a trip to the Alamo the next before heading back to Houston.

You might bring your car camping gear and spend the night at South Llano River State Park on the way home.  It's a couple miles outside of Junction and roughly halfway between Houston and Fort Davis.   You might need a reservation on the weekends but this is a good park for 5 year olds and has hot showers, cold clear Llano River (tubing, swimming) and lots of friendly wildlife.  Generally a kid-friendly place but can get crowded on summer weekends as it is frequently used by kayakers and bird watchers.   You can make a reservation or call the park through their website just google it for more information... There is lots to see out in the Trans-Pecos region of Texas.  Quite frankly, it is the promised land.  Which highway will you be taking there and back?  Although it may add a few miles, going by way of Hwy 90 from San Antonio is not a bad route.  Once you get past Del Rio, you have the Judge Roy Bean Museum, Lake Amistad and Seminole Canyon SNA.  Plus, the scenery out that way is quite nice.

not sure if you have seen but the prude ranch has an indoor pool.

The people that run the place are a great bunch of people. I have had a good time every time I have been out there.

Sorry it took me forever to respond .. forgot about this and then I forgot my password took  forever to remember ... anyways

the trip was wonderful! The boys had a blast. Prude Ranch was nice. Very accomidating. The boys were entertained even without a tv etc...  We weren't in our room that much but when we were it was nice.

went ventured out to Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center and Botanical Gardens, Balmorhea, Monohans, the observatory and got to see Saturn .. .it was amazing... went into Alpine for dinner and a movie ... and loved the small little town in fort davis. The old couple at the broom shop were the sweatest, helped the boys make thier own brooms. The food at the little cafe by the ice cream parlor was good. We loved their pancakes.

It was a really great trip, nice place to have a first vacation. I would recommend it to every one. We still need to make it out to big bend sometime too!
