Sometimes it's not uneventful

Usually the most excitement I have on a road trip is hitting a rabbit. This time I impressed my friends by having a flat just past Sweetwater as it was getting dark. I have some great Toyos that aren't very old, but it looked like I ran over a screw. My spare was flat, due to never being used and I forgot to bring a bicycle tire pump like I usually do. A guy at a nearby farm house aired up the spare and we cruised on to Big Spring.

At the TA truck stop they said I'd have to go to Wal Mart to find a tire and they'd mount it, but not guarantee that they wouldn't break the rim. Wal Mart actually had a crappy Goodyear the right size, and with much stuggling, a few scratches and a little blood on the rim, the guy at the truck stop got it mounted.

Then we were back on the road with the moon rising. We prayed that the deer would stay on the shoulder, and they did. We found an excellent place to camp illegally, and actually got some sleep before our hike started the next morning.

On the way out we were hungry for Mexican food, after all the bragging one of the guys had done about his wife's cooking. We didn't see anything in Alpine and went on down the road. Found a place in Ft. Stockton called Beinvenidos that had lots of cars in the lot. They had only a buffet that was serve-yourself on styrofoam plates, and there was usually a line and people hollaring at the help that this or that ran out. It wasn't the greatest, but it hit the spot and had lots of local color. When I walked into the house about 6 hours later, my wife woke up saying she smelled Mexican food.

This is the greatest thing I've ever read.
The time has come.
