Were there ever any "I shouldn't be alive" episodes at Big Bend?  I love watching them to learn from others mistakes.  Some of those people carried less than I carry on a day hike.

No there hasn't but there has been some cases that perhaps could qualify for the show.  Unfortunately for those less fortunate BIBErs, survival isn't an option most of the time.

There was at least one that I read where the guy Hiked to and climbed Elephant Tusk, climbed up with out his day pack and then couldn't climb back down and then had to set off his emergency beacon, dang wish I had book marked it - I'll see if I can find it again!

Yes, he's on the board.  Somewhere is the thread.  By "bootcanyon1cougar" or some such name.

This one?

Echoing CG, I think the desert environment (heat, exposure, lack of water) pretty well equates "I shouldn't be alive" with "I'm not alive anymore."

Yep.  That is his name.  It was a climb he made right around New Year's and the weather turned quite cold.

The adage that the book is better than the movie (or the TV show) is true in this case.  If you haven't already done so, pick up a copy of Laurence Parent's Death In Big Bend. It details the stories of those that aren't alive - sometimes through pure bad luck.

This story would be so much more interesting if I could spot the places on the map 1) where this fellow was when he realized he was lost and 2) where he was when he got cliffed out in the canyon. The story says that he tried to head northeast after the horse trail petered out, which makes little sense, after reaching the river, unless he had wandered about 1-1/2 miles in a southwesterly from the south fork at the river...  :eusa_think:
