Sounds from the campsites?
« on: September 09, 2010, 05:22:56 PM »
Now I've heard plenty while in the park campsites... Snoring, a girl having a REALLY good time with her boyfriend a few sites over (her sounds reverberated throughout the basin walls), and of course the normal animal fare... One sound I have always been curious about, though, is one that I never went to explore. I was with my ex and she was sound asleep and it was maybe an hour or two before sunrise and then there was the sound...

If you've ever seen a male lion (mane and all) standing on a hilltop or roaming about while calling out to reinforce its boundaries and/or maybe to attract a female, imagine that type of interval, that type of call, but imagine the call being not quite so "boomy". I heard something walking up through the campsites doing that and I imagined that it was a bear calling, but to this day I cannot imagine a bear walking pre-dawn in the dark calling along the way.

Another thing is that I have never heard anything in the park moving and calling like that all the while. Had things been different and if I had the big light on me at the time, I would have crept out of the tent in a heartbeat to see if I could spot the thing while it made its way towards the amphitheater. To this day I wish I knew what in the heck that could have been. Anyone have any idea? I figured it wasn't a mountain lion because I've never heard one "bellow/growl", and even if it did I'd figure it would be a higher pitch than what I heard.

Remember, folks, it's 100 miles to the closest hospital.

Either it was a vocal javelina, or it was that chick's boyfriend trudging along from the restroom because he knew she was STILL awake!  :eusa_clap:

Holy crap! That solo growl sound sounds JUST LIKE IT! Only at the first part, not where it gets higher pitched after a few growls... But the first few and later growls were spot on the same sound I heard!

Any of these sound familiar?

The biggest thing was that I could never figure whether it was a bear cub (or sub adult) or a cat... But factoring in that it was during the pre-dawn timeframe, I was thinking that it was probably not a bear. Not that I haven't seen bears up way after sunset or way before sunrise (about 3:30 a.m. was my earliest sighting of bears crossing the road in the park), but still... Got the chills after hearing that! :)

Noticed that many times while backpacking in winter. Small noises are magnified.
