Title: Dec. 2, 2018 OML Water Report
Post by: Baji on December 04, 2018, 08:28:20 AM
I hiked the standard OML clockwise from Friday, Nov. 30 to Sunday, Dec. 2, with the additions of Emory Peak and South Rim. There was plenty of water at Boot Spring--2 liters per minute from pipe. Lots of water at Juniper Springs although didn't find a great pour off spot so took about a minute per liter to collect. Fresno Creek flowing well across the Dodson so could just submerge and fill bottles instantly.
Saw a bear on the Juniper Canyon trail just before the JC-1 campsite.
Saw only one party of 3 on the Dodson trail and no one on Blue Creek Canyon trail.

Thanks for the report! Guess the bears haven't bedded down for the winter just yet...

Out of curiosity, how busy were the main Chisos trails (Pinnacles, etc.)?

The Basin area trails didn't seem that busy to me but I did leave early and it was a Friday so I missed some of the traffic. I left the Basin a few minutes before 7 a.m. right as it was getting daylight.  I saw no one between the Basin and summit of Emory. Saw 4 people coming up Emory while I was descending Emory.  Saw a handful of people down near South Rim and only 1 other person while I was going around NE Rim trail. On Sunday when I was descending Laguna Meadows trail back to Basin, I saw no one but that was probably because it was late morning.  Anyone going up the trail to South Rim would have already gone up and no one was coming down yet.

Thanks for the report.  Going to head out there on the 12th and it's good to know I'll have water if I need it out there.

Hiked the OML clockwise Feb 4-6 starting from Chisos Basin via Pinnacles Trail to Juniper Canyon Trail. Plenty of water flowing at both Boot Spring (2L/minute) and Fresno Creek (40L/minute).
