Mule Ears to Mariscal (and back) water report
« on: December 16, 2017, 03:26:53 PM »
Wanted to get a quick water report in for those heading out over the holidays.

We went in for 8 days and we checked out 48 springs and tinajas, the good news is there is lots of good water out there.  Here is the Caltopo map of the route with springs

Here is the full trip report.

Smoky Creek drainages all springs are running with Willow (black rock section), Nunca/unknown/Red Peak, Witch and Hermosa B  running really great.  Slickrock dry and Taza, Lizard and Hermosa A bare trickles.

Fresno drainage going down the most western branch from Cooper spring through the Water works lots of long running water.  Estrecho and Fresno springs running, the last water is a pool at the palm tree.  Further down Frivol and Frosty are dry but Frog (the farthest down) is running with a low flow for about 50'.

Ombligo del Elephante is a mirage.

Fisk canyon- Dominguez is running well, over the dam but Dog has even more flow.  Very low flow at Mano Abajo and up that side wash Mano is dry.  Upper Fisk water at Carney and some at Cansado.  Lots of pools at Poor Man's Loco tinaja.

All for now, looks like a great start to the winter hiking season.  A trip report coming when I get home but first we have to enjoy HMoD's epic!

Most everything we saw is good for several months, only the ones I noted as being weak I wouldn't count on.

I will say that we were there right after the snow storm and .5 to 1" of precipitation but other than the tinajas the flows we saw were not affected by that IMHO

What a coincidence!!!!!! Thanks a lot! I will be at BB after Christmas and I had planned to hike Mule Ears to Mariscal. I have seen couple of your previous trip reports, so would be nice to see this trip report as well (maybe before my trip  :icon_biggrin: ).

Another water update from my trip 27-30 Dec, 17.

Mule Ears - Good
Smoky- slow
Dominguez- Good
Elegant- very slow flow and small pool. Bees trying to scare you when you get close to the pool.
Elf-Good
Elephant - Good
Hermoso A- Dirty and just small pool
Hermoso B- Good

There were many pockets of water on the Canyon area and creek beds along the route but either they were not clean or reliable to mention. I have some photos and videos of these water sources that I will link to when I have all pics and videos of trip upload to cloud.
