Title: Rough Spring - April 24, 2018
Post by: Flash on May 05, 2018, 05:11:12 PM
I stopped at the last pullout at the bottom of the Basin Road, got out my eTrex20, and checked for the nearest spring. Rough Spring 1.2 miles it said. Huh, I thought, sighting along the arrow to see if the way appeared passable. Looks like I Just need to cross that saddle south of Rough Mountain... Why not? Once I found the power line road and saw it was going the same way I was, we were in business. Eventually dropped into the smooth rock ravine that wound around until I made a left up the main ravine that took me on up to the spring.

Cottonwood = water, therefore spring ho!

First water spotted. Popular spot from the looks of the tracks.

Pretty good flow along the canyon bottom... and this is the tail end of the dry season.

Bit farther up, but looking back.

View from the brow of the hill I took to bypass a lively bee tree.

The source is coming from within this thick tangle of brush.

Hard to see exactly, but when my foot slipped, it plunged into this corner of the upper pool. It was 3-5 inches deep there, judging from my wet boot.

Glad to see it's still flowing!

Great to see so much water in this long dry period and so many cottonwoods.

Must have, so good job! I was on my way to the Sam Nail Ranch area to explore Cottonwood and Little Cotton springs. I pulled over at the end of the Basin Road to see what waypoints were nearby, I saw Rough Spring, and the siren call of a blind bushwhack must have carried me away.

Great to see so much water in this long dry period and so many cottonwoods.
Now I am thinking this might be a good spring to include in a loop around the north Chisos in cooler weather. Need to learn about Ash, Skree, Bailey, and Burham springs...

Been to all, except Skree. Ash was dry, Burnham was dry, and Bailey was wet. Iíll post a link later.

Here you go - Bailey https://mirrormagic.com/2012/10/29/trip-report-big-bend-oct-29-2012/
