Sierra Blanca CBP Agents Seize 2,110 Pounds Of Marijuana

Agents of the Sierra Blanca Station of Customs and Border Protection's Border Patrol Marfa Sector discovered over a ton of marijuana mixed in with a load of avocados last Thursday. The seizure occurred at the Sierra Blanca Checkpoint on Interstate 10.

As agents waved the 18-wheeler through the checkpoint they noticed something that made them suspicious. Two agents followed the truck onto I-10 and pulled it over for further inspection. They discovered 2,110 pounds of marijuana wrapped in plastic bundles hidden in cardboard boxes. The boxes were mixed in with boxes of avocados. The truck was driven by a U.S. Citizen from Nevada. Also in the truck was a co-driver who is a naturalized U.S. Citizen from the Ukraine and residing in Pennsylvania.

The value of the seized marijuana is $1.6 million. The drugs, the vehicle and the two drivers were turned over to the Hudspeth County Sheriff's Office.

Since October 1, 2005, Border Patrol agents of the Marfa Sector have seized over $58.8 million in drugs including over 63,000 pounds of marijuana and over 249 pounds of cocaine. The Sector has also apprehended more than 6 thousand illegal aliens during the same period.
