Alpine CBP Border Patrol Agents seize $1.8 million in marijuana

Two U.S. Citizens were unsuccessful in their attempt to smuggle a large load of marijuana into the United States Monday, Jan. 30, 2006. The men were trying to circumvent the Border Patrol Checkpoint south of Alpine on Highway 118.

Customs and Border Protection Agents from the Alpine Station Border Patrol Marfa Sector were able to seal off a ranch road that the two were using to haul 2,292 pounds of pot in a Chevrolet Tahoe. The stop occurred about 9 a.m.

Both men are originally from Texas, one from Dumas and the other from Alpine. The street value of the seized marijuana is $1,833,800. The vehicle, the two men and the dope were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Since Oct. 1, 2005, Agents of the Marfa Sector have seized over $31 million in drugs including over 33,000 pounds of marijuana and over 130 pounds of cocaine. The Sector has also apprehended more than 2,500 illegal aliens during the same period.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control, and protection of our Nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.

OVER $31 MILLION since Oct 2005 in the Marfa sector alone?!?!?!

Holy Schmoly! If that's what they've been able to stop, what got through?

James P. Dumas was a good man.

And yes, I am related to the man... and my mom named me (my middle name) 'dumas'.

Just wanted to set the record straight... I have never smoked pot.  One of these days I'll try it.  Probably soon after I get married...

I wouldn't have a problem legalizing it.  It is probably a safer drug than beer, whisky and tobacco.

I think Costner's Fandango and American Flyers are his two best movies, and both were made in '84.

And I don't watch many movies, but will say, 'Cinderella Man' is an excellent film and you will enjoy it even if you don't care much for boxing.

We had stopped at the DOM site during our first trip to Big Bend two years ago.  I was not familiar with the movie, but quickly found some info on the web upon our return home.  I had been wanting to see the movie ever since.  My husband just recently found it on DVD and bought it for me.  Maybe it brings back too many memories of my misspent youth (I was in college in the 70's) or maybe it is the memories of being in Big Bend, but I love this movie.

I immediately went back to the web to find the websites.  I discovered that they had been significantly upgraded, with lots of new info that I thought might be of interest to others.

general site with info from Chuck Bush  (aka Dorman) and others:

I posted this on Alex's site years ago.  I'm glad to see he keeps it up.  One of the greatest cult movies ever :D

Actually Alex, there is an easier way to get to Dom without having to rely on GPS: From Ben's Lounge (don't break the pool cues, they're $25 bucks each), go north on FM170, through Presidio, pass the state park... once you get to the Tee Pee's, make a 'U wee', go back to the top of the 'big hill' and park next to the green trash can. Head towards the river. You can't miss it! I've camped at LaKiva and hiked to the bar, once a year for the last 5 years. I'm the man in the know when it comes to Big Bend, Lajitas, Mexican Strange (the donkey lady), etc.
