The University of Texas at Austin on Saturday named the McDonald Observtory visitors center in honor of retired observatory director Frank Bash, and the honoree was on hand for the occasion. Bash was instrumental in establishing the visitors and education center, in addition to helpinig bring to fruition the Hobby-Eberly Telescope, one of the world’s largest and formidable astronomy telescopes atop Mount Fowlkes, as well as its sister telescope in South Africa. Bash served as director from 1989 to 2003, retired from teaching in May and now is a Professor Emeritus.  (staff photo by ROBERT LOUIS HALPERN)
