Good Food in far West Texas, and on the way there
« on: March 20, 2006, 11:36:22 AM »
I figured this thread could be helpful for people looking for some good grub.  I'll start:

Marfa - the Pizza Foundation is very good pizza...surprisingly.  Also I've hear Maiya's is great upscale Italian.  Jett's grill at the Paisano serves a mean ribeye too.
Alpine - La Casita has been serving great Mexican on the South side of town forever, and it's cheap.  Great red enchiladas.
Van Horn - Toni's is a one-room place with open kitchen, and serves up awesome mexican food, with huge home-made tortillas and good rellenos when in season.  Papa's Panrty on hwy 90 is also good.  Avoid Chuy's at all costs...tourist trap.
Midland/Odessa (on my way down I-20 from Fort Worth) - the Hog Pit just East of the airport has a massive rib plate, with some nice greasy ribs that fall apart in your hands.  That's usually my stop on the way out.

My Dad always stops at Sarah's Cafe in Fort Stockton for Mexican food.  It's at 106 S. Nelson St.  They're not open on Sundays or holidays, but are otherwise open 11-2 for lunch and 5-9 for dinner.

Update:  When we were out there in November, 2006, there was a sign saying they were under new ownership and planned to reopen "soon".  The roads around there were being overhauled so lots of businesses were shuttered.  Someone please let me know if they ever reopen.

I mentioned in my latest trip report to GuadalupeNP that we stopped in Sonora...about 190 mi west of San Antonio on I-10... and had a lunch at a small start up Cajun restaurant called Lacayo's. The owners are a husband and wife team who where displaced by Hurricane Katrina. So, they set up a new shop in Sonora, TX (of all places).

Authentic Cajun food. Great Poboys, gumbo, red beans & rice, even fried alligator!  Stopped there twice...once on the way out and once on the way back. The bosses will even come out and "set a spell" talking with customers.

One of the tricks that I've learned to finding good, cheap places to eat is to follow the cops. When we pulled off the highway in Sonora, there were 3 cop cars at this small restaurant. I think that translates to a 5 star rating!  :D

Anyway, here's their info if you ever need it:

Lacayo's Cajuns Of New Orleans
1005 North Crockett Ave
Sonora, TX 76950

If traveling on Hwy 90 to Big Bend, stop at the "No Name Restaurant" in Sanderson.  Great food.

No time to stop for food!  Must get there ASAP.  Stop at the local stop-n-rob and grab a waxy bean & cheese foot long burrito and toss in the microwave and head-em-out.   Only stops are for petro.  Gotta use the restroom, better time it with the need for petro - unless the driver needs to go and the gas station is on the right side of the road    - seriously, it's already a solid 12 hours, every stop adds "must have the precious" time to the trip.  Cut it a little too close this last trip West, the low fuel indicator came on twice - once just before Irann and then on the way back outside of Junction.   Or, raid the ice chest for good ole momma home made sausage/cheese balls and tortilla wraps!   Sometimes a good ole DQ Hungerbuster ain't bad or a Whatburger or Sonic jalapeno burger.  When I used to stay in Alpine on the way there,  La Casita Mexican Restaurant.  For breakfast, Peggys Diner in Alpine.

When in Presidio, El Alamo.

When near BBRSP headquarters ranch house/bunk house - must make prior arrangements.

Ate at the truckstop once in Fort Stockton, only thing open late at night on a Christmas day.  Would not suggest it.

LA CASITA A recent visit indicates that La Casita is a favorite of students, business people, and law officers. Really, though, who wouldn’t like this unpretentious Mexican cafe? The ingredients are fresh and wonderfully combined, whether you order the cheese enchiladas or a taco salad. Beer & wine. 1104 E. Ave H (432-837-2842). Open Mon-Sat 11:30-8:30. Closed Sun. MC, V. $ [map]
