Looks like we will be making a drive, after our stay in Big Bend, to Presidio, Shafter and Marfa.

Any recommendations as to hotels or other places to stay at in Marfa?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Not First Hand...

Not first hand, but, Texas Monthly did a spread a few months ago on the redesigned/refurb "hip motel" of Marfa as being the Thunderbird.  If you go up the road a few more miles to Alpine, I've always had good luck at the Ramada Inn Express and they do have a great / true breakfast buffet that's included - at least they did several years ago when we stayed there.  Nice, clean, reasonable priced.  I got the best rates from http://www.hotels.com  I've also stayed at the Best Western in town, but was less impressed with it - primarily because the room we were in was at the top of the stairs and we heard everyone coming/going and there were a bunch of kiddos running around.  A freind of mine stayed at the ANTELOPE LODGE in Alpine and it was also nice and rustic.  I'ver never had any meal or anything in Marfa, but based on past posts that you can search for there are a number of great places to eat in Alpine - I've always enjoyed one Mexican place in particular LaCasita - also Peggy's diner also had a great breakfast.  I guess I'm just partial to college towns and Alpine is definately a college town.    Maybe in a round about way I helped you out with this post, but I failed in that I have really nothing to offer on Marfa.

I've never stayed there (or anywhere in Marfa), but the Hotel Paisano is worth a visit.  In addition to being an historic cattleman's hotel, you can see the memorabilia from the 1955 filming of the movie Giant, starring James Dean, Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson.

I have never stayed at the Paisano either, but agree with Joe that it is interesting to see.  The movie Giant did a lot of good for Marfa at a time when they were in the midst of a terrible drought.

Last spring I stayed at the Paisano.  A room with a balcony.  A bit pricey but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Really fancy and NICE COMFY beds.  Jett's grill was great for supper.  Splurge a bit and try it.  I definatly will again.  the Giant memorabilia is really cool and the main street stuff is all walking distance. I hated to leave.

I gotta go with the Paisano. I haven't had the chance to stay there yet but the history from Giant and James Dean et al, would be too much to keep me away from it if I had the chance.

I've stayed at the Paisano twice....very nice. Jett's Grill was tasty too. I saw the Thunderbird on my study tour and it was done in a more modern design, but still pretty cool. If you can't do lots of stairs, stay there, as the Paisano has no elevator. 8)
