That's really hard to believe.  I have very non-upscale memories of living in Marfa when I was in middle school:

I remember chasing antelope with my 4 wheeler on the ranch we lived on.

I remember working in my step-dad's feed store that he ran in downtown Marfa.

I remember when nobody knew where to look for Marfa lights because there were no signs, much less an official visitor area.  My Junior Historian class wrote a letter to TxDot (or some organization) to recommend that they put up a sign so people would know where to park.

...the current-day Marfa doesn't sound like what I remember...

Here's a funny one:  I also remember trying to breakdance with the older kids during lunch at school.

Hey Randell, did you work at Godbold's (sp?) Feed?

I was going to Sul Ross in the '70s and remember:

driving to Marfa to eat the stacked enchiladas at the Old Borunda Cafe, when the women were still cooking on the wood-burning stove in the back

parking at the entrance to the old Army Air Field on Hwy 90 to see the Marfa Lights

driving to OJ and seeing huge herds of Pronghorn between Marfa and Presidio

driving the Pinto Canyon road on my way to Capote Falls

going to Chinati Hot Springs and having the caretaker ask me to watch the place while he went to Ruidosa for supplies
The real desert is a land which reveals its true character only to those who come with courage, tolerance and understanding. - Randall Henderson

It wasn't Godbold's.  It was a business my step-dad only had open for a few years in the 80s.

That is where we parked - the entrance to the old Army Air Field.

I saw the lights a few times, but never had any "encounters".  My step-sister claimed to have an "encounter" when she was with the guys working cattle one time.  She said it was right after dark and they were all finishing up and she went around the side of a pickup to pee.  She said this humming orb popped out of nowhere right next to her and she ran stumbling around the pickup in terror with her pants down.  I don't know if they were just pulling my leg, but they seemed pretty serious when they talked about it.

I spent a day in Marfa last October and saw the new Thunderbird. Actually I thought it was really cool. Didn't stay there but got to look around anyway. I've stayed at the Paisano which is nice as well. Just don't have lots of heavy luggage because there's a big staircase. Didn't bother me, but some "regular" women would complain...LOL. There's alot of cool places there and eateries and such but mostly it's an artsy fartsy town. A place where one can go and nobody will know you and you can make art out of a plastic take out food container, fill it with rocks and put it on a pedestal......and call it ART!  I know, I know....all in the eye of the beholder....LOL. Hey but this is a free speech kinda place, so I can share. The Chinati Foundation is not for everyone. Donald Judd took historic barracks and filled them with lots of aluminum boxes, they're all different, mind you......but there's also 2 buildings full of them. But there's plenty of cool, hip peeps hangin out there making ART! Our group left saying......"what time are arriving at Fort Davis for lunch?"
Shane and I share the same impatient sarcasm it seems, LOL.....and while I was there I decided to strike a pose and make my own art. And our photographer took a pic! I didn't know.....I was just being a silly head!
The viewing center is like a big party basically. They should set up a bar there, LOL most everyone is drinking anyway and they bring lawn chairs and it's great social fun....The first time I was there I saw some lights....the second time too, but hard to distinguish. Everyone looking at them has a different thing to say "no, those are headlights, blah blah".....still had fun. :D
