Mea Culpa (Maxima Culpa)
« on: December 04, 2009, 08:47:08 AM »
Well, I'm here in the basin lodge (Friday morning) looking out on a few snowflakes, frozen mist, fog, and ice.  The roads are glazed and the road to/from the basin is closed.  We may be stuck here an extra day (well, stuck is not exactly a bad thing).  I knew it was going to be cold on this trip, and I knew we were only going to be here a couple of days, so in an effort to simplify, I DID NOT BRING MY CAMERA.  We saw patches of snow on the slopes of Lost Mine Peak and Casa Grande when we arrived on Wednesday.  The frozen trees and grasses are coated with twinkling white.  Beautiful.  So this is an opportunity lost (photographically, at least).  Now I have an excuse to get one of those smaller point and shoot cameras for Christmas that I can always take with me.

Whatever you do, don't tell Homero! He'll be crushed.

Don't they sell disposable cameras in the gift shop? :icon_biggrin:

No cell phone camera, and I really don't want more prints.... I'll just take mental images today.  As I sit here in the restaurant, the snow flakes are getting larger and starting to blow across the view.  It is so thick with fog/snow/etc that I can barely see all the basin buildings.  We just got an announcement that the road will probably not be open at all today.  Ah... good food, friends, new and old, conversation, and a warm snug room!  Not bad.

While you're hanging out, see if you can get them to fix the webcam.

Go buy a disposable!!!!!  You can always scan them or have them scanned.  You'll regret missing this opportunity!!  Who knows when you'll be there with snow again.  Don't wasted it.

Or at least ask someone there with a camera to share theirs...

Sun's out!  Beautiful thin layer of snow everywhere.  Time to get out and (carefuly) explore the area.  Maybe a shuffle along the window View trail.

Good news / bad news.  The basin road is supposed to be open around 1PM.  We were told that if you stay, be prepared to stay for two more nights because of more snow/ice expected tonight and tomorrow.  Sigh... I guess we'll be heading out this afternoon from our winter wonderland.  It sure looks like a Christmas card around here.  Just waiting for the official word, and then the long trek home.

Friends were generous enough to share a few of the pictures they took during this winter storm.

Here's a view towards the lodge from the motel.

And a view down the road from the Basin just below the lodge.

And pine needles coated with snow and ice.
