Black-eyed Pea Off is set in Terlingua
The 17th annual world championship Black-eyed Pea Off is set for New Year's Day in Terlingua Ghost Town on the porch.

Turn-in time for cooks to submit their peas is 2 p.m., and they can cook on site - or not. Just turn in good and hot peas for the judges. There is a $5 charge for peas (this is used as prize money for the top three winners). There is also a trophy for the first-place winner.

One of the judges will be the Alpine Avalanche's favorite columnist, George Covington.
There will be fun and games as well. The tortilla toss, a cake walk, horseshoes, etc. will help raise money for the Terlingua school activity fund. There will be a bowl, spoon and cornbread available for a $5 donation so folks can go around and taste the peas for good luck

"A lot of people don't know the story about why eating black-eyed peas is considered good luck," said Pea Off maven Pam Ware. "This Southern tradition started the first winter after the Civil War You have to understand that after the Yankees won and marched back across the South, what they couldn't eat, carry or herd off, they destroyed. The black-eyed peas were overlooked as the Yankees considered the crop to be cattle fodder. So you were [really[ lucky to have black-eyed peas to eat that first winter."

See you there?  I'll be on the RED motorcycle  ; )

Great crowd of enthusiastic pea cookers!

A great variety in style.

60 degree sunshine on the porch.

I wish!  You'd have seen LOTS of pictures of that car if he had been there.

I did meet Marty Whitlock, an opera singer, and quite a few walking history books . . .
Fascinating people!

I missed the tortilla toss, but did get invited back next year to cook in the horseshoe pitching area.
