Rabies Drops Begin Next Month

 
(December 15, 2006)--Animal food treats with dose of oral rabies vaccine will be dropped from airplanes next month in parts of south and west-central Texas.

The Texas Department of State Health Services says the winter effort will target coyotes and gray foxes.

Thirty-five Texas counties will be part of the airdrop involving about 3.2 million baits.

The 2007 version of the agency's oral rabies vaccination program begins Jan. 5 with flights from Zapata County Airport.

Crews will move to Kimble County Airport in Junction and Alpine-Casparis Municipal Airport in Alpine around Jan. 12.

All flights are weather permitting.

Oral rabies vaccine airdrops have been going on in parts of Texas since 1995.
