Was that one of the rooms with a fireplace and wet bar? If I remember correctly, that was about the price for such a room.

Yup. That was one of the Los Portales rooms.  Nice big bed for 2 adults to mess around on :D

I agree.  Hadn't realized  the Gage had gotten so expensive, but it's been a while since I stayed there.  No way I'm stopping that close to the park unless I'm falling asleep at the wheel.

I wasn't alone at the Gage, Roy  And, I wasn't alone on the following night at the El Dorado  I wouldn't recommend the El Dorado, but you could bargain for the price there.

I didn't even know the El Draino existed until I was driven there on that friday night.  The driver knew about this place!  We were going to tent it at the Basin,  but it was getting cold early, so it was off to the Motor Inn in Study Butte. They wanted ~ $90.00 for a room, so I recommended we look elsewhere(talk about a cheapo).  The La Kiva was nearby, so we went there for  entertainment. She wanted Grey Goose Volka in her drinks.

Has anyone  recently stayed at the Matharon Motel? Should be somewhat less expensive than the Gage.

And what is the story with the El Dorado, anyway?  Sounds like all the reviews are bad.  I've heard some local folk call it the El Boracho since they sometimes stay there when they've had too much firewater.

A good less expensive place used to be the Mining Company/Egg motel. Any reports from that one recently?

I stayed at the mining co place once, in one of their cabins.  It was ok, nothing fancy, but clean and by far the cheapest place that me and my two brothers could all have a bed.  It was only like $60 to rent the cabin w/ three beds and a kitchen for one night.

I stayed at the El Dorado once right after it opened and it was ok, it was clean and around $50.  About a year later went back, not so clean and they wanted something like $90.

Only other motel in the area I've stayed at is the one in the Basin and it's been six or seven years.
WATER, It does a body good.

Like my freind at "Gallery Furniture" of Houston - the man that turned $1,000 into gadzillions through late night non-prime-time advertising... Let me save some of you $$$$$, and get you to spend some money at the same time and help stimulate this economy - keep people employed!  Did you know that CONSUMER spending (you, me, and everyone else) makes up the vast chunk of the GDP?  CONSUMERS RULE AND SHOULD BE TREATED AS KINGS AND QUEENS!

What's wrong with staying in the BIBE Basin?  NOT to take any overnight guests away from the other fine establishments in the area, except 'LaHideous'

It's hard to beat the centralized location and I do enjoy visiting the breakfast buffet before exploring the park.
