To have Been Born In Shafter.

The name McCamey rings a bell for some reason?

Ah, the stories she probably told about being born in Shafter.  I wonder what Shafter was like in 1920?

Oh, don't you know it!  They could bring the history of that area to life.

Outstanding idea!  We'll form the Shafter Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) and have tours of the area, maybe convert one of the mines into hotel rooms    and an eatery - just don't get any quick silver dust on your food.  Have a kisok that continously plays Andromeda Strain with the scene around shafter on the flyby, etc.   Heck, a gas station and a grocery store would be a welcome addition.  We could have T-shirts that say "Shafted in Shafter"  "or fell down the shaft @ Shafter".  Maybe put in one of them Astroworld type rides that "shoot you up" and have it so that it lowers you down to the bottom of a shaft and then shoots you up into the daylight!

Here is information on McCamey, TX on the TSHA website.  It references a George McCamey as having done some oil exploration in the early 1920's.  Likely all part of the same family...

Gracias.  I knew I'd "seen something" about it "somewhere".  In fact, I've driven through it - in search of a spare tire.

I'm surprised you have not driven through it - on your way from the DFW area?  If I go that route for some reason - I-20, I cut down on 385 to McCamey and down 67 to Fort Stockton.

I always exit TX-18 in Monahans and take that South to Ft. Stockton.  Got a big 'ole rock chip in my windshield last trip going down 18.
