Twitter - mountain lions?
« on: July 20, 2009, 11:20:52 PM »
Just spending some time searching the internet for all things Big Bend and came across this on Twitter.   I have absolutely no information about the author or the event, but thought it sounded very interesting.   Has anyone else heard any rumors of this or do you believe it is totally false?

Here's what the post says in case you're not signed up on Twitter.

was told last night by a friend that she survived an hour plus stand-off with TWO mountain lions in #bigbend national park last week! yikes!

If it did happen, she didn't bother telling anyone else.  Sounds fishy to me.

I thought it sounded like a bunch of baloney too.  I figured if it had happened there would be someone on this board who had heard about it.

if some woman by herself was in a stand off for an hour with 2 lions and lived to tell about it, I don't think I want to know what she looks like.

Two mountain lions? That's odd. Usually they're solo and these may have been kittens that haven't left Mom's yet. They hang around for about a year or longer before going out on their own. I still don't get the "standoff" part...

In my younger days took care of the live cougar mascot at UH, Shasta, based on experience with live cat as well as knowledge of them in the wild, my personal thought is no way. 2nd agree with Muse, cougar in the wild are solitary except to mate or rear yearlings, very protective of young but usually when trapped unable to retreat. If you have not run the cat off in a matter of moments, you are lunch, all the advantage shifts, you become the food chain. 3rd, No reports, I think if I had an encounter in the wild, as soon as my heart slowed down, I would be telling the park staff and anyone who would listen.

Yeah, it's not on BB's site or the NPS Morning Report;  don't think this is real.

My questions is , if they were kittens: Would anybody know if they had jingle bells and whistles strap to their paws? :icon_eek:. You know, in these dangerous days one has to be over protective......yes :eusa_think:
Stay thirsty, my friends.

I'm still not convinced....these cubs aren't spotted like cougar cubs should be!  :eusa_whistle:

Ahhh silly girl, those are the elusive soft paw, Western Chihuahuan, Mountain Lions, they have slightly different coloration and the cubs are not born with spots.

I figured you would have know that, geeze...gotta tell you every thing :icon_rolleyes:
