ALPINE – Travelers should add about 15 to 20 minutes to their traveling time when traveling between Alpine and Marfa. The TxDOT (Texas Department of Transportation) project for passing lanes is now underway, with completion expected at the end of June 2007.

The primary construction area at this point is located coming out of Marfa going east to Alpine, although there are construction warning signs along the construction route, which ends close to Paisano Pass. This is the third passing lane project for TxDOT in this area for the last few years.

The first project was building passing lanes coming out of Balmorhea up into the Davis Mountains, on Hwy. 17 and the second runs from the “Y” east of Alpine to the Brewster County line; both of those projects are now completed. According to TxDOT, the lanes are being built around the area to accommodate an anticipated increase in traffic based on recent studies.
