Big Bend 2011--First Trip
« on: January 18, 2012, 09:30:01 AM »
OK--using my new-found ability to post pics, I am going to chronical the trips of 2011 (this could take a while!).  Also, please make note of the obvious--I AM NOT LANCE SNEAD, OK?  Then again, who is?

This first one was early Jan 2011, with my Bro making his first trip to BB.

(Question--can I/should I post non-BB trips?)

Anyway, here we go:

My Bro and I, as a warm up, went up Carter; here's one on the way up the big scree slope to the shoulder; it should be noted--at the top of the shoulder, you can hang a right to Carter or you can hang a left to Gilbert's Promontory, which I have not done yet:

Here's looking down on Oak Springs Trail--this is where Elliott and Darrell came down from Vernon Bailey a month ago:

This is looking down the other side (lower Cattail)--the black smudge down there is my Bro; he is chillin and still trying to figure out this kooky desert environment where all the rocks move (rock avalanche!) and everything sticks or cuts you:

Once above the shoulder, it's still a ways to go!

Summit block; the best way up is the gully to the right:

After that intro, my Bro's next target:

On the way up CG, looking out Green Gulch:

Cool natural arch on the way up CG:

Cool image showing the entire Lost Mine Trail and clearly showing the way up Lost Mine Peak, including the Notch:

My Bro with Pulliam Bluff, Peak etc:

Look Ma, no hands!

Next day we did the entire Rim loop:

Also rode some of the desert roads; visited Santa Elena and Cerro Castellon:

OK--about to hit post--I hope this works!  If so, I will do this more often, hopefully post something interesting.

Glad your finally getting some pictures up.  It's about time!  I love how the very first hike you took him on was a giant scree slope up Carter and how Rob was kinda freaking out and yells.. "HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF A ROCK AVALANCHE?!?!"  :willynilly:

It was funny.  Even from the get go, it looked like trouble (but I am an immersion theory guy--throw them in the deep end)--even as we got to the dry wash on the Window Trail, I head off down the dry wash and he's like, Why are you going down there?  And I say, because this takes us to the bottom of the scree slope and because it's fun!  And he balked--he parallelled me along the WT until he had to bushwack over, which I think he regretted.

FOR SURE! they would go in the Non-BIBE Trip Report Section.

... and he's like, Why are you going down there?  ....  And he balked--.
Let me guess; Rob is the older brother?

Great photos!  I am eager to see more!

Man!  This really makes me want to take a run out to the Bend!
Ah Big Bend, we will soon return to reacquaint ourselves in our ritual of blood, exhaustion and dehydration. How can we resist the temptation to strip ourselves of the maladies of civilization?
